Latitude D630 Intermittently Does Not Recognize AC Adapter

I recently acquired a used Latitude D630.  Works great except for the fact that it intermittently does not recognize the AC Adapter.  The adapter is a Dell FA65NS0-00, a 65 watt model.  The laptop comes intermmitently comes up with a message to the effect that I do not have a 65 watt adapter connected and that the performance will not be as good as it should.  Sometimes it will observe that the AC adapter is connected, but it won't charge.

Any recommendations?

The power jack is working properly.  The computer always acknowledges when the AC adapter is plugged into the power jack.  Nothing intermmitent here. Sometimes it will charge. Sometimes it will tell me that I have an unknown AC adapter plugged in and to plug in a Dell 65 W adapter or larger.  It's as if the computer thinks it has enough power from the AC adapter to power the computer, but not enough to power the computer and charge the battery simultaneously..This AC adapter is a genuine Dell 65 W unit.  I've ordered a genuine Dell 90W unit which should hopefully cure this problem.

Try a new Dell adapter - if that doesn't solve the problem, the mainboard needs repair or replacement.

There's about a  30% chance the adapter is the problem - the  usual cause is a bad power jack, which on this model is a hard-soldered part of the mainboard.  It's worth trying another adapter before replacing the mainboard.

Are the 65 watt adapters particularly trouble-prone?  Should I consider a 90 watt adapter/

The power jack can work just fine even if it's faulty - it's the third wire (the pin inside the power plug and hole in the jack for it) that provides the sense to the detection circuit.  It is worth trying a new Dell (NOT third party) adapter first, but the likelihood is that the jack or mainboard is the problem.

A Genuine Dell 90 W AC Adapter is on the way.  We will see what how it works.  I've replaced a few of these power jacks and they are a lot of "fun."

Every time I plug the adapter in, the computer recognizes that an adapter has been plugged in.  It just doesn't recognize that it is the proper adapter.

Got the 90W AC Adapter today.  Problem solved.  I suspect that the original 65 W AC Adapter just didn't have enough output to satisfy the on board detection circuitry.
