Laptop restarted- have lost EVERYTHING!!

Hoping someone can help. My laptop restarted itself this afternoon and when I returned to it I found that I had lost EVERYTHING! My recent holiday photos, documents for University etc are all gone. As you can imagine I'm pretty worked up about it all and to top it off apparently my support warranty has expired. Is there anyway I can recover these files? Any help will be greatly appreciated- thanks!

Try doing a system restore, to a time before you had this problem. Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.

See if your files are back. If not then you may wish to try recuva.

Hi did you use the Dell Factory Restore or create a new user account? It is strange for all your files to just disappear.

What model and what OS (Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit)?

Did you use system restore?

Hi, nope didn't system restore or create any new accounts, it just came up with windows has to restart to configure updates or something along those lines. It does it every so often anyway so didn't think anything of it but it's never done this before. It's a Inspiron 6400 Windows Vista Basic....?

Now that you've done that, buy yourself an external hard drive and make a full backup.  There are two kinds of drives:  those that have failed, and those that will fail.  Your system is of an age where, if the hard drive is original, it is on borrowed time - they last 3-5 years, so plan for the drive to fail and keep a backup.
