E1405 screen - horizontal lines and out of sync

periodically my screen starts freaking out and horizontal lines appear.. sometimes the screen starts moving like crazy (like it's out of sync).. Dell's tech support suggested I check to make sure the memory is seated properly. ?

what BIOS rev are you running?

It could be MCE. I never loaded XP Pro on my laptop, never saw the need for it, MCE is basically the same thing with more fancy features. But id highly doubt a certain version of the OS is enough to cause problems. I think, at this point, it HAS to be a driver problem. Ive downgraded my GMA driver, and its only happened once int he last week, as opposed to every few hours previously. Also, it generally happens when im away with my lid closed (computer still running), and rarely happens while im at the computer.

so that means Dell never fixed your problem then, right?

I guess this just confirms my original thought, that it's a driver or BIOS problem... the question is how do we get Intel to fix the problem if Dell doesn't recognize that it's a hardware issue. This can't be isolated to just the few people who responded to this thread..

Also, I have Windows XP Professional installed so to answer your question, it is not limited to Media Center Edition...

where did you find the "down graded" driver... I want to give that a try...

Two weeks ago after reading Stiv625's message (with all the pictures), I emailed dell tech support with my complaint and a link to this message thread, and asked them to replace my graphics card under warranty.

The graphics card is "part of the motherboard" so it all had to be replaced.  I sent my Laptop in, and they replaced the motherboard and sent it back to me.  I have not had a problem with it since.  It is possible it may come up again, but I'm hoping not.

I have A07, just because of the lack to realize A08 existed. I cant think its BIOS, because it works fine in other OSes and driver versions anyways. Ill try talking to tech support again.

I just emailed tech support and they are arranging for me to send my laptop in for service. If anyone else has the same problem as shown in this thread, just point to this thread!

As stated above, they are saying it is a bad video card.

Mine has been getting a lot worse since i posted this forever ago. I need to get on Dell about it, my original emails never really went anywhere with them. My warranty is up in a few weeks.

yes, get on it. My motherboard was swapped out and that seemed to do the trick but sometime after that I discovered that my screen started wigging out. Whenever I unplugged my AC adapter, the screen would start flashing like crazy. I just had my screen replaced too. Get it done quick because u never know whether it's a nasty combination of both the motherboard and the screen.

I got my LCD replaced a few months ago, but it was an unrelated issue. My screen flashes out almost everytime i leave my computer running for an hour or more unattended with the screen closed (but Windows set to not Standby). unplugging the power during this makes the screen go blank/black *but not off*.

stiv625,

Please be sure to contact us about this problem, and get a Case number.  This will ensure that your problem is documented before your warranty expires.  Please remember that this is a user to user forum, and posting here is not the same as contacting Technical Support.

All,

If the problem exists on an external monitor, then it points to a problem with the video card.  If the problem does not exist on an external monitor, then it points in a problem with the LCD.  In either case, if you are under warranty, contact Technical Support so that we can arrange service.

Running the memory test from the Dell Diagnostics is a good idea in either case.

After talking to support and re-seating the lcd cable, It happened again. While it was in funky display mode, I was able to hook up another monitor (like support said to do). Switching into the different modes with my laptop I saw some different things. In display mode (laptop LCD off, external monitor on), the external monitor displayed the same symptoms. In presentation mode (lcd on, external monitor on), the laptop lcd looked fine, and the external monitor displayed the lines. I sent this info to my support ticket and they are sending out a tech to replace the LCD. Needless to say.. I'm extending my service contract today as well. ;)

Tech just left. He replaced the motherboard. I guess it was just a mix up in the email response I got from support. But he did have both parts so that was nice.
