BIOS and adding memory

I have an Inspiron 8600 purchased March of 2004 with
Phoenix BIOS version A04 and 512MB of memory.

My question is can I add a 1GB memory card and leave
one of my 256MB cards in place giving me a total memory
of about 1.3GB?

If not, would I need to upgrade my BIOS or buy two 512MB
cards and forget the extra 256MB card and be satisfied with
only 1GB.

Thanks

Tom

Just tried to add a 1GB Card and received an error stating I need to upgrade my BIOS. However the system recognized the add memory but windows xp failed to run.

Sorry,

You also asked about installing the 1GB stick by its self, yes I did but with the same results.

Marshall,

Yes I did get the memory installed.

First I returned the first 1GB stick. I believe that it was made by Corsair.

I purchased a new card from Comp USA made by Centon.

I removed  one 256MB card from slot A and installed the

1GB card and restarted the laptop, it came up with the same

BIOS message. I turned it off and rebooted again and everything

has been working fine ever since.

I hope this helps
