Bigger Fonts

How can I make the fonts on my screen bigger without distorting the images?  I tried to change the DPI but things get a little fuzzy.  I have a 5150 UXGA monitor 3.2Gz.

Thanks

DPI settings are usually your best bet. Can you be more specific? What text would you like to enlarge? What things get fuzzy when you increase the DPI to Large Fonts?

I have a similar problem.  Since I downloaded updated drivers (release 52.16 then 53.03) for the NVIDIA GEforce2 Go videoon my Inspiron 4100, resolution really seemed a lot crisper.  Unfortunately, fonts in some applications became unbearably small, and I can't figure out how to enlarge them.

Like Miles12, I'm running at maximum resolution (1400 x 1050 pixels), because the display really does get fuzzy at lower resolutions (not to mention that the system flashes dialog boxes telling me such lower resolutions are sub-optimal).

I've adjusted everything I can under "Display Properties" and am using fonts sized at 134% (129 dpi), so now I can read most things.

However, I'm still having problems with those websites which specify their own fonts.  Text on these pages comes out really tiny.  Obviously, if the site is using specific fonts, you can't use IE's View-Text Size settings to enlarge it.  And if you override a site's font settings, you usually wind up looking at some really ugly formatting.

I've adjusted all the NVIDIA settings I can (although a couple of potentially helpful-looking options seem to be grayed out).  I've pored through hundreds of pages of NVIDIA documentation and even tried using magnifiers, to no avail.

Can you suggest anything?

Well, I thought of that, too.  Great minds think alike  :-)

Unfortunately, overriding a site's fonts usually just messes up the formatting.  For example, the Associated Press' website (customwire.ap.org) apparently specifies line heights to match its fonts, and overriding its font size simply crams big fonts into tiny lines.

Besides, one would have to toggle it on and off all the time, because it would also mess up the formatting on all those other sites which don't specify font size (for which it IS preferable just to use View-Text Size to enlarge the text).

Mostly internet stuff with large or small graphics.  Excel looks good as does most of the fonts on this page.

I'm going to try to increase the DPI to 110%.  Maybe that will work better.

Thanks for the reply.

itzajob, try Tools - Internet Options - Accessibility button - Ignore font sizes specified on web pages. That should let you adjust almost all text to whatever size you want. The exception is font that's part of a picture - no help for that, since you can't re-size pictures larger in IE.

Miles, I don't know what to suggest for you - unfortunately IE is one of the places where making size adjustments doesn't always help. I also run into some problems with pictures in IE, and haven't found a solution. It's only a minor annoyance for me, and I still love my 1600x1200 UXGA screen. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Miles12, here's another idea.

I'm finding that the current version of Netscape (7.1) allows me to enlarge the text on many "font-specifying" websites which the current version of Internet Explorer does not.  (Go figure!)

In Netscape, enlarge text by going to "View > Text Zoom" (or, just keep hitting the "Ctrl + =" shortcut key combination until you reach the desired level of enlargement).
