After formatting, computer not recognizing all of memory

I recently formatted my computer (I've successfully done this 2 other times).  But this time when I did it my computer is only recognized 8MB of some 54,000MB that it said it was reformatting.  I discovered this when trying to re-install items and it said there was not enough memory.  So I right clicked on the c: drive and went to properties and it says the total about of space is 8MB.  What did I do wrong along the way to make it do this?  I tried re-doing everying again, but it still only shows 8MB.  I deleted the partition, and created an new one with the full 54,000MB and formatted it NTFS style.  What should I do now to fix this problem?

Model? Drive size? OS?

Inspiron 600m, 60 gb, Windows xp
I guess I should also say, when in the process of formatting, my computer showed 4 partitions...
one was 8mb,one was 3000mb, another one 50mb and the 54000mb one.  I think even tho I'm formatting the 54000mb (partition E), my computer is trying to run off of Partition C - 8mb.  How do I get my computer to run off the right partition?

I'm not sure about choosing which partition is the bootable partition, as far as I know, if you install it on the 54,000 partition that should be the one it boots from. Based on whatever else is on the other drives you might just want to delete them and try installing on just one drive.

It's an error.Get a bootable partiton magic cd or try a different utility. Also if you use xp, there should be an option in the install wizard wich will let you delete the partiotion and then create a new one of the right size.Happened to me too once or twice.
