Some of the keys not working (urgent)

Down arrow and right arrow keys stopped working about 10 days ago. The next day when I started my laptop, both keys started working again (but not so properly) before they completely stopped working.

And today my other two keys G and H have stopped working. I am afraid all of my keys will stop working eventually.

My laptop is Inspiron 5468 14". I have already tried reinstalling the driver. Do I need to change the keyboard? Or can it be repaired? Should I try cleaning it myself? Due to lockdown, local technician shops are not open at this time. And I have a report-writing job to complete urgently. I was not that worried when the arrow keys stopped working but now I am stuck and can not continue to work from home.

@ejn63  Thanks for your reply and the USB keyboard idea.

Does my laptop keyboard need to be replaced or would it be worth trying to clean and reconnect the keyboard?

The keys stopped working all of a sudden. Will this spread and damage all of the keys? Can you suggest how do I prevent this?

The immediate need can be met by an external USB keyboard.  If it works properly, the internal keyboard will need to be replaced.

There is no generic answer -- if you have a keyboard brush (or even a clean, soft bristle unused paintbrush) you can try gently sweeping around the keys.  If that doesn't work, you'll need to replace the keyboard.  It could be anything from worn-out key actuators to damaged traces on the flex landings, to just plain blockage due to debris.

Go into device manager uninstall keyboard and driver and restart PC. Let driver install again and see if keyboards works correctly. If not then the keyboard is either contaminated with something causing some keys not to work. Or the keyboard simply requires a replacement. If you believe nothing has been spilled on the keys I would try compressed air in a can to see if you can loosen any debris that worked under keys.

@Johnnythegeek @ejn63  Thank you for your kind help.

I shut down the laptop for the last 10 hours and the G and H keys have started to respond when pressed some of the times.

1. This happened with the arrow keys (right and bottom) before they stopped working completely about 10 days ago. G and H keys are repeating the same behaviour.

2. G and H key: now they either respond together or they don't respond at all. (Whenever G is working, H works too)

Does this make something? I completely puzzled and I am afraid I will lose all of my keys before this lockdown crisis ends.

Because the affected keys are next to each other. I would make a guess that the problem is affecting them both because of foreign material or a liquid spill. In any case physical damage means likely that the entire keyboard will have to be replaced. On notebooks it's pretty much impossible to repair or replace keys by themselves. Luckily most keyboards are rather inexpensive and not really difficult to replace. Dell generally has online a repair sequence for replacing the keyboard for a model.

I have an Inspiron 15 7000 series 7548 and have had the exact same problem for the past week. G and H keys frequently stop working, and my Up (but not the other directions) as well, but also the key for '/" and my left Alt key. Periodically they stop working altogether, and sometimes when they do work, it glitches and a single press generates several types "i.e. gggg or hhhh". Given it affects most of the exact same keys as the OP, I do not think it is coincidence. Hoping Dell might be able to take note of this.

Update: The glitches are even weirder now. In addition to the malfunctioning keys (G, H, left Alt, Up direction, and key for ' and "), I find that, if I hold down the G, H and J keys at the same time, it produces a string of Fs, as in ffffffffffffff. As per above (and the original poster) my buttons occasionally work, but often just stop working.

Please try these options one by one and check after each option.

1. Till your problem is resolved and you need to do urgent and limited typing, use Onscreen Keyboard - Type OSK in Windows Start Search Box (Cortana) > Click On-Screen Keyboard

2. Run Keyboard Troubleshooter
Type Troubleshoot in Windows Start Search box > Click Troubleshoot > Scroll down and click Keyboard > Run the troubleshooter > Follow onscreen directions

3. Uninstall & reinstall Keyboard Driver
Windows Key+X (Or right click on Start) > Click Device Manager > Expand Keyboards > Right click on Standard PS/2 Keyboard > Uninstall > Reboot the computer to reinstall

4: Turn off filter keys in Ease of Access
Type ease in Windows Start Search box > Click Ease of Access > Click Make the Keyboard easier to use > Ensure Turn on filter Keys is not checked

My g,h and up arrow  as also stopped working all of a sudden. I can see a recent update by Dell in the updates. It appears they are doing it intentionally only. Otherwise few random keys wont stop all of a sudden

Same issue!  Cannot use g, h, quotes/apostrophe, or up arrow.  Started suddenly mid-use.  Fixes offered above did not solve the problem.

Exactly the same here: ffffffffffffff (now using external keyboard). Did you solve the problem?

There may be several reasons for the malfunction of your keyboard keys. I will address what  I have experienced and the solution I think I have found. The problem may be due to poor design or defective parts from dell.  My 'key' failure is intermittent.  I called Dell support and they tried to help but could not resolve it. I have since found that the key fails when my laptop HEATS UP.  What I've done is to ensure that the poorly designed vents at the bottom are free from obstruction (Not sitting on anything). I also TURN OFF my laptop when not in use to cool it down. This has helped a great deal. I hope Dell will fix this problem from the factory!
