Slow wifi download speed - solved (not Smartbyte)

Hello,

I found solution for very slow wifi speed for my new inspiron 3000 on reddit. I still had the problem after I uninstalled Smartbyte, so this saved me from returning the product. The download speed increased 7 times. Here is the solution:

"

Hope these steps help anyone out there dealing with this frustration...

Backstory:

Purchased a Dell Inspiron 7000 / 7375 2-in-1 laptop. All was well but the internet was unbelievably slow (0.1Mbps), even though it was connected to a high speed FIOS network.

Dell customer service was no help. After an hour on the phone, they were stumped & said it was a hardware issue. Shipped the laptop back to them, waited a few days, & received the "repaired" laptop. Fired it up. Same issue.

After scouring the internet for an answer, I finally stumbled across a solution. Turns out the Qualcomm QCA9377 802.11ac Wifi network card has some type of issue with certain routers.

If you're having an extremely slow internet connection, even though you have already uninstalled the Smartbyte application, follow these steps & links to fix it.

Solution:

From YB:

Out of desperation, I started tweaking random settings on my router and stumbled across one that finally worked. The directions for other routers may be a little different, but here’s what I did:

1. Go to http://192.168.1.1 and login to your router. If you’ve never done this, look for instructions that came with your router or do a google search to find the default username and password.

2. Find a page that has QoS settings. For the E1200, you need to click on “Applications & Gaming” and select the “QoS” sub-menu.

3. Disable WMM Support.

4. Click save.

From me:

Here were the specific steps I used to disable toe QoS WMM support on my Frontier Communications FIOS router:

1. Go to http://192.168.1.1 and login into your router as admin

2. Click Change Wireless Settings

3. Click Advanced Security Settings

4. Click Other Advanced Security Options

5. Click WMM Settings

6. Uncheck the Wireless QoS (WMM)

7. Click Apply

8. Click Logout

Run a speed test on your laptop. It should now be transmitting data at a much faster rate, depending upon your network.

Hope these steps help anyone avoid this frustration. Hopefully, Qualcomm and/or Dell finds a permanent fix to this issue.

Good luck everyone!"

Removing the Killer apps and Drivers then  Leaving Windows 11 to replace the wireless drivers with an Intel One automatically solves the issue instantly . You guys should really consider avoiding those being pre-installed it's was hard for me and i know what i'm doing imagine non technical people believe your laptops are not good.Mine is a G15 Ryzen Edition having the same issue as Inspiron

I wish i had found this before i spent 1.5 hours on the phone with a Dell Tech. I did found the same solution from another forum while i was on the phone with them. reset the qos wmm on my router and now the wifi is up to speed!

Thank you - Thank you - Thank you

After 4 hrs of remote service by a Dell technician yesterday, the solution was to ship back my new computer. I was waiting to receive a box for shipping, until i selected the correct keywords 'slow download fast upload', and after a few irrelevant (even pompous messages about removing 'smart byte') I found found this one, Once I found my router's password and navigated deep into the Verizon router controls - BANG - worked

Dell obviously knows about this problem, yet was happy to ship me the computer and had no idea how to fix it. A serious support issue i would say - solved by the correct search string

Wow! Many thanks for this! My download speed was consistently less than 2Mbps via wifi since i bought laptop last month (but 60Mbps via ethernet). Immediately after making this change, my speed went up to 20Mbps. not blazing, but order of magnitude improvement.

Thank you so much for documenting this setting change!

If anyone knows how to do this on Netgear, please let me know.  The Netgear instructions at https://kb.netgear.com/24266/How-to-enable-Quality-of-Service-QoS-on-routers-using-the-NETGEAR-web-interface evidently apply to older modems, and my C6300 is only a week old.

Can't find anything in the admin page about QoS.

thanks in advance.

  • I had the same problem. When Dell advised me to take the same steps, my speed increased from 1 mbps to12, but the Apple macs dropped from 85 to 20. So I reversed the change in the Verizon router back to the original settings. I pay for 100 mbps service. The tech that Dell sent to swap out the Qualcomm wifi card told me that the problem is that that card is incompatible with the Verizon router and that I would have to have an Intel wifi card. I had to insist repeatedly to finally get Dell to agree and now my speed is at 80+ mbps.

I used this solution to solve my slow Wi-Fi speeds (was ~30Mbps, now ~250Mbps), so thank you!  My Frontier router IP was 192.168.254.254, so you need to look at the info tag on your router for your IP address and Wi-Fi password.

However, my Inspiron 3535 from Costco would revert to ~30Mbps after waking from sleep.  Toggling the WMM settings above would  temporarily fix problem.  Since I could not find anyone else who had this problem, I experimented with my router settings (Realtek 8821CE Wi-Fi) and unchecked "Wake on Magic Packet" and "Wake on Pattern Match" in Device Manager, and that has, so far, fixed my problem.  Path was Device Manager, Network Adapters,  Realtek 8821CE..., Advanced tab, then disabled above settings. I hope this helps someone else in this same predicament.
