ram upgrade issue for Inspiron 16 plus (7620, 12700H, 16 GB DDR5 4800 (2x8G), 3060)

I'm having an issue during ram upgrade on new Inspiron 16 plus PCs with 3rd party RAMs.

the model's major spec is "17-12700H, 16GB (8GB x2) DDR5 4800 RAM, nvidia 3060 GPU".

the RAM was need to be upgraded to 32 GB.

First time, I tried Corsair Vengence 32GB kit (16GBx2, DDR5 4800), but the PC didn't boot.

so I returned the RAM and ordered new RAMs from A-Tech's. the new RAM stick was made by SAMSUNG which was same bender of the original ram modue, so I expected no issues on it.

But this second try turned out same result with the first try.

So I wonder if this laptop can be upgradable with 3rd party RAM module or not.

And more awkward thing is, it won't boot even just swapping positions of the original ram modules only (not new RAM modules),

I have tried service mode too, but same result.

Is there anything I'm missing here?

to summarize my points are..

1. Is the RAM upgrade on this model possible or not?

2. If the above 1 is possible, what is the cause of my failure?

3. if the failure is caused by compatibility issue, what is the compatible 3rd party DDR5 4800 RAM for this model?

4. And this is just curiosity of mine, but why won't it boot when swap their positions of the original memory sticks?

thanks.

Hello,

When you tryed the corsair or the Samsung memory and the system refused to boot did you hear any beep code or flashing light ? The led that is used to indicate the battery status is also used to let you know about issues when the system is unable to display an error message read the "system diagnostic lights" section of this manual (page 66).

Hello,

Insspiron 16 plus 7620 supports a maximum memory of 64GB DDR5 4800 mhz as you can see in this manual but dell systems are known to be very "picky'" about what ram they accept this is the reason why i recommend crucial if there memory sticks don't work you can return it and get your money back.

The system fails to boot because it detected memory it doesn't like memory from corsair well dell doesn't like it so it seems.

well.. Incompatibilty with corsair ram,  maybe.

but its original ram module is SAMSUNG 8GB module, and my second try was SAMSUNG 16 GB module.

Same brand, same spec and only RAM size is different.

And as I said on the question 4, it won't boot in case of swapping its own original ram module locations (DIMM1 stick  to DIMM2 socket, DIMM2 stick to DIMM1 socket) either.

so I cannot sure crucial ram will work on this PC or not.

OK,

I could boot the PC with new SAMSUNG 16 GB modules while I was waiting "system diagnitics lisghts".

It seems that booting takes more time than normal in case of internal part change, and I am not patient enough.

thanks.

I just wanted to add my 2 cents to this thread in case anyone else needs it.

Went to upgrade from the default 16 g Samsung to 64 g g.Skill Ripjaws.  Laptop would not recognize the new ram at all. No error lights, nothing.  Returned the g.skill ram and bought Crucial since I could not find a reliable seller of Samsung branded ram in the amount I wanted (another reply mentioned problems with Kingston ram so I avoided that).  The Crucial DID work. Was recognized without issue. Hope this helps.

  • If after installing the memory and turning on the computer, look at the Led of the power supply connection. If the light does not blink and simply turns on and then off, just wait. The BIOS is updating and eventually you will get a message informing you of the Bios update. It's just a matter of patience.
