Inspiron 5558, won't turn on, power/charging light is blinking

Hi. Good day.

I'm using a Dell Inspiron 5558. I regularly clean my laptop by using some brush on the surface. These time, I took of the battery for the first time and clean the inside. I carefully work my way out and avoid touching any metal parts. I use some tissue and blow a little.

I place my laptop down and plug the charger. I turned on my pc. Normally, it would light up and start booting within seconds. To my surprise, the screen remains off and the charging/power light is blinking. Then I saw that the battery wasn't put back. So I immediately remove the charger from the laptop. Put back the battery. Then plug the charger back in.

After plugging in the charging/power light did not turn on. I just thought the battery is fully charged. I turn my laptop on and it didn't turned on. Screen is off and the charging/power light is blinking slow.

Does it have to do with me turning on the laptop with out the battery? What should I do? There are no computer repair service open in my area due to the COVID19 pandemic. I really need my laptop. Online classes will start soon. Please help me.

Thank you in advance.

4 is a memory failure.

Unplug the system, remove or disconnect the battery and hold the power button for 30 sec.  Remove and reinstall the memory module(s) -- then try powering up.  If the same error arises, try one module at a time in each socket until you isolate the bad module (replace it) or the bad socket (replace the mainboard in that case).

If you're having issues with your Inspiron not turning on, please do the following.

1. Perform a Hard Reset

If it doesn't work proceed to the next step.

2. Check for any LEDs or beep combinations.

Dell Inspiron Notebook systems have a long history of built in diagnostic indicators. These can be audible beeps, power buttons that display different states and colors, specific diagnostics LEDs or a combination of them all, in order to indicate at which point during the Power On Self Test (POST) a system is having issues.
Read more in this article: A reference guide to the Inspiron Notebook Diagnostic Indicators

Once you find out the beeps and colors combination, you may act accordingly.

Does the computer starts with AC adapter connected to it ? If yes, check status of adapter in the BIOS by following steps below:

Note: The status of the AC adapter should say it's type in BIOS. If adapter say None Or Unknown, computer will continue to receive power but will not charge the battery.

1. Power off system

2. Power on system, quickly start tapping F2 key continuously until you see BIOS menu

I checked the charger cable and block. I think it's fine. I tried turning the laptop on using the AC and battery. Both have the same outcome. Screen is trying to turn on then turns off. The charging/power light is blinking slow. The blinking of the light and turning on and off of screen keep on repeating with a few seconds interval. Thus, I cannot access the BIOS menu.

Then I decided to turn the laptop on without plugging the charger. Again, the light is blinking and the screen is trying to turn on the gets off. It is actually in sync with the blinking of the charging light. I let it that way for sometime. After few hours, there is a loud beeping sound.

Upon hearing the loud beeping sound, i press the power button once and the beeping disappear. I plug the charger and the charging light is on. Not blinking.

Now, since it's on charger and the charger is working fine, everytime I press the power button, you will hear the loud beeping sound. Charging/power light remains on. The screen on the other hand remains totally off. No longer turning on and off.

I hope you could figure out what is your wrong and could give me a home remedy for my laptop.

Lastly I would like to thank in advance and for you quick response to my query.

Again, thank you and God bless.

I would like to add, the loud beep has a pattern. It is 4 beeps. The a pause. Then 4 beeps and so on. A friend of mine said that I should check out the number of beeps and it's meaning. So I wonder what the 4 beeps means.

Thank you

Hi. Good day. I followed your procedure. I found the 1 ram that is causing the 4 beeps. Instead of replacing the ram, i cleaned it using the eraser. After cleaning it, i place it back to it's socket.

I turn the laptop on and it booted. Then i open the bios menu. I checked the battery and it says the health is poor. I guess i need to change my battery.

Anyway, laptop is working fine. Just the battery runs out too fast.

Thank you very much for all the help.

God bless you and the Dell team.

Good to know EJN63 troubleshoot step help get the computer up and running again.

Now, the status of the battery being 'Poor' does mean battery lifecycle is coming to a end and needs replacement.

Please check out link below to see if there's a battery in stock for your computer.

Thanks for the update and sharing your findings for others to see with same problem.

My issue is similar, but I don't even get a blink. The charging light only lights of a second when I plug it in. The laptop does not respond at all to pressing the power button.

I replaced the battery, and then replaced the small cable from the battery to the computer.

I have tried two different AC changers, and I tried the reseat the RAM trick.

All nothing....

Hey try to use laptop only on its battery. Try not to use laptop while it is plugged in . It will recover your battery's original state soon somehow no fully but better than before may be fully but i depends upon you that how much care do you take of it . In some cases battery may be damaged fully .

Hi there . don't worry its a simple issue . I had gone through this problem.initially i got frustrated cuz of it but when i troubleshoot it i found that there was a problem with my laptop's ram it may be bad but this happens in rare cases its best solution is just remove your ram and clean its terminal with rubber . And clean the inner terminals of the ram slot inside the laptop with some brush tools or something like that but be carefull . Now after cleaning put the ram back in. And tirn it on . Here you go.

Hello. I am  having a similar problem. My Dell Inspirion 15 will not turn on. When I plug it in, the white light goes on momentarily and then goes off.  The power source is  lit up and does work with a different computer.  I have already tried removing the battery, holding the  power button,  and attempting to restart without the battery or anything  else plugged in. This did not work.  I have ordered a new dc adapter with the hopes that this is the issue. I am truly hoping someone can  help me. I have read it could be short and I would have to replace the main board. I do not know if I would be able to do that on my own as I am not very experienced with repairing  computers.  Taking  out the battery was a huge accomplishment for  me. Any help I would truly appreciate.

Best,

Nancy
