Inspiron 16 7610, Touchpad not working

Inspiron 16 7610

Inspiron 16 7610

I have new Inspiron 16 7610 for a month and  it has touchpad problem  randomly. Touchpad has random taps and swipes, inaccurate finger tracking. I will contact with Dell but wondering is there anyone has that problem or any simple solution for it?

Sgaddala, this touchpad problem is a very widespread problem that has plagued users of the Inspiron 16 7610 since its launch. It's caused by static buildup on the touchpad, and inadequate grounding. It affects at least a third of Insp 7610  owners at this point.

There is one DIY fix for it, it involves taking the back cover off and grounding the touchpad with the touchpad frame. I'll link you to the thread here that covers this fix, and a simpler aluminum tape non-soldering fix. I actually fixed mine this way, and it's been working perfectly for 3 months now. Please be warned this will void your warranty. That's why I need to first recommend contacting Dell below...

I would recommend you first go through Dell tech support. Dell is recently aware of the problem, and they *may* have a redesigned touchpad that they can repair yours with, but I will warn you, that's what they told me back in March of this year, and they replaced the touchpad with the same faulty design and it glitched out on me again within a week. Hopefully, they have a working fix for this, and you can get it resolved.

Here's how you approach Dell:

1-  try to recreate the problem. It's intermittent, so it will happen whenever it decides to. Usually after about 30 minutes of using your device. if it happens, use your phone to video the problem. Don't just video your screen, record your hand and the screen while you're moving the touchpad.

2- try to recreate the problem in BIOS setup. If you're in the middle of your touchpad glitching out, reboot, and start spamming F2 until you end up in the BIOS setup screen. No need to change any settings. The touchpad will probably behave itself for a few minutes, and then start glitching out. This footage is VALUABLE because it shows Dell it's not a Windows Driver related problem.

3- Open your ticket and tell them you have video footage of the problem. They will escalate your issue, and send someone else out to replace the Touchpad.

In the mean time, so that you don't drive yourself crazy, here are some short-term fixes the rest of us picked up:

  • put your whole palm on the touchpad and touch something metal like a desk or chair leg to ground the touchpad.
  • close the lid momentarily and open it. For some reason this seems to disrupt the problem and will get your touchpad to behave for a moment or two.

Good luck! And I'm sorry you have to deal with this. This problem drove me crazy for months until somebody figured out the DIY fix. I went through a full laptop replacement, and a visit from a Dell technician. Dell even offered me a full refund 8 months after I bought it. The problem came back 45 days after they replaced the whole laptop, and a week after my touchpad was replaced. Now I just want to spare others the grief I had to go through. Good luck!

The most common placement is on the F9 key. To re-enable the touchpad on your Dell computer, press the button resembling a TouchPad button and see whether you regain the TouchPad functionality.

The F9 key on the 7610 has nothing to do with Touchpad or Touchpad settings.

The issue as stated below is a design fault. The problem could be remedied by providing a more adequate ground to the touchpad. No one has yet to confirm the latest touchpad design from touchpad replacements provide a permanent fix.

I am also getting the same problem. Everything works fine other than touch pad and scroll .. very difficult to use the laptop.

My brand new Inspiron 16 5620 is also giving the same erratic trackpad problem. Not sure what to do. Dell support has tried a number of software solutions but all have been a temporary fix.

I have Inspiron 16 7620 and the trackpad is so slow or erratic that it is unusable. I have to use an external mouse so this is basically a desktop computer at this point. It is very frustrating that they keep selling these with such a glaring defect.

Thank you for the short-term fixes. I have changed the trackpad (raised ticket with Dell) and it still has the issue (appeared again after a month or so).

Grounding the trackpad with my hand and metal seems to work, I cannot believe how much money I spent on this Inspiron 16 Plus to have a problem like this, Come on Dell... You're better than this!!

Thank you Grgamel314 for posting this!

That's disgraceful. After over a year of knowing about this problem (and its solution), this should have been fixed with no issue. I'd suggest putting in another ticket and confirm with both the CSR and the Technician who comes out that the new touchpad will be the updated version with proper grounding!

If you're close enough to end of warranty (or you are just that frustrated), you could try the DIY fix above. I'm now going on 9 months of 100% reliable behavior after soldering a ground wire to it.

Touchpad issues such as random taps and swipes and inaccurate finger tracking can be caused by various factors, including software glitches, hardware faults, or incorrect touchpad settings.

Here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue:

  1. Update the touchpad drivers: Go to the Dell Support website and download the latest touchpad drivers for your laptop model.

  2. Disable touchpad tap-to-click: Go to the Control Panel, select "Mouse" or "Touchpad" options, and disable the "Tap to click" option.

  3. Adjust touchpad sensitivity: Go to the Control Panel, select "Mouse" or "Touchpad" options, and adjust the touchpad sensitivity to a level that suits you.

  4. Disable touchpad while typing: Go to the Control Panel, select "Mouse" or "Touchpad" options, and enable the "Disable touchpad while typing" option.

  5. Reset the touchpad settings: Go to the Control Panel, select "Mouse" or "Touchpad" options, and reset the touchpad to its default settings.

Same exact problem.  Dell technician came out and replaced the trackpad/keyboard (still under warranty) and the new trackpad had the exact same issue.

The above recommendations are informative, but are not a solution for the specific issue on this thread - as this thread relates to a common issue specific to the touchpad hardware on these laptop models.
