I want to add a hard drive to Inspiron 5593

I have a brand new Inspiron 5593 with SSD, before getting it I had confirmed with Dell that I can add a HDD, which I want to do to use as data drive while the OS and programs will be on the SSD.

Everything I have found indicates that this can be done and it is supposed to be pretty simple, but of course the manual doesn't touch on how.  Before I open up the case on my brand new laptop, I was hoping for some comments from anyone who has done this with any advice or anything I ought to watch out for.

You can indeed add an HDD or better yet a 2.5" SSD. The specs are in this page. And the service manual is on this page explaining the procedure.

Everything you have "found" indicates this can be done?

If so, "everything" should show how.

Welcome to the Dell Community  @n4aof

If adding an SSD, SSHD or HDD you will need the caddy and cable.

I am not sure if Dell would include them, so it would be best if you open the laptop just to make sure???

Inspiron 5593 Service Manual:

My thanks to both the forum users who responded, but...

As I mentioned in my original post, I have the Dell service manual for my 5593 -- and it only addresses removing and reinstalling an original hard drive.  While the physical installation of an added hard drive would be the same as the "Install" steps, nothing in the manual addresses any issues that might be involved in adding a hard drive.

According to the manual there does not appear to be any "caddy" involved.  One post I had found elsewhere stated that the cable was already in place in that user's new Inspiron laptop, but that post did not go into any further detail about the process.

That's why I was hoping to find another user who had already installed a second drive into an Inspiron to see if there was anything more than just putting the drive into the space, connecting the cable, installing the screws, reassembling the case, and telling Windows to put the data folders on the added drive.

For example, will the BIOS automatically recognize and correctly identify the added hard drive? (I would expect so since most BIOS are smart enough to do that now).  Are there any other settings needed?

I'm hardly new to computers, but I'm facing enough of a learning curve just finding my way around Windows 10 for the first time, so I'm not counting on everything being obvious and transparent even though I have done the equivalent on many desktop machines over a few decades of computing.

@n4aof

Sorry the hard-drive bracket: "Caddy"

Yes: The BIOS will automatically recognize and identify the added hard drive!!!

No: There are no other settings needed.

Install, partition, format and set as "Default" storage sounds about right.

Even though my new Inspiron 5593 was only ordered with a NvME SSD, it also has both aforementioned caddy and interposer cable, required to add a SATA HD or SSD.

You should be able to format the SSD and install it in your laptop without any problem.
