Headset mic doesn’t work

I have a Dell Inspiron 15 5000 Gaming Laptop that I bought this January so it is relatively new. Recently, I bought a new gaming headset but when I plug it into the laptop, it doesn’t recognize that I have plugged in a headset (when I go to “manage audio devices” it doesn’t say that there are any other devices). I can hear through the headset perfectly fine but when I try to use the mic, it automatically defaults to the laptop’s mic. I’ve tried using this headset on my phone and it works perfectly fine so it’s not the headset’s problem. Please help!!

Download Waves MaxxAudio Pro for Dell from Microsoft Store.

Click on the playback icon (head facing left). Select output device to Headset, not Headphone.  Boom!

Still not resolved? Use the "Get Help Now" option at the bottom right to chat with a Dell technician right away.

When you plug a device into the Audio port of a new Dell with a combined audio port, you should get a popup to confirm what you plugged in.  If you do, select Headset instead of Headphone so the Mic will work.

If you are not getting the popup, try opening the Waves MaxxAudio from the hidden icons or from the Apps listing on the Start Menu.

It says there are three replies but I cannot see them.

Is there any news on this issue?

I tried to download a driver for the audio system and it said it was not available in Windows 11.

Any help would be appreciated.

If the microphone on your headset is not working as expected, there could be several reasons for this issue. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you troubleshoot and resolve the problem:

  1. Check Hardware Connections:

    • Ensure that your headset is properly plugged into the correct audio/microphone jacks on your computer or device. If you're using a USB headset, make sure it's properly connected.
  2. Test the Headset on Another Device:

    • To rule out a potential issue with your computer's settings, test the headset on another device, such as a smartphone or another computer. If the microphone works on the other device, the issue might be with your computer's settings.
  3. Check Microphone Privacy Settings:

    • On Windows 10, go to "Settings" > "Privacy" > "Microphone." Make sure that the "Allow apps to access your microphone" toggle is turned on, and that specific apps you want to use the microphone with have permission to access it.
  4. Update Audio Drivers:

    • Outdated or incompatible audio drivers can cause microphone issues. Visit your computer manufacturer's website or the headset manufacturer's website to download and install the latest audio drivers.
  5. Set Headset as Default Recording Device:

    • On Windows 10, right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar and select "Open Sound settings."
    • Under the "Input" section, make sure your headset's microphone is selected as the default recording device.
  6. Adjust Microphone Levels:

    • In the Sound settings, click on "Device properties" under the input section.
    • Adjust the microphone levels and ensure that the microphone is not muted.
  7. Check Headset Microphone Mute Switch:

    • Some headsets have a physical mute switch on the cable. Make sure it's not set to mute.
  8. Run Troubleshooters:

    • On Windows 10, go to "Settings" > "Update & Security" > "Troubleshoot." Run the "Recording Audio" troubleshooter to diagnose and fix microphone issues.
  9. Test with Another Microphone:

    • If possible, test your computer with a different microphone to determine if the issue is specific to the headset microphone or a broader problem.
  10. Check Background Applications:

    • Some applications can take exclusive control of the microphone, causing conflicts. Check in application settings if any program is set to take control of the microphone.
  11. Virus or Malware Scan:

    • Run a malware scan on your computer to ensure that malicious software is not affecting your microphone functionality.
  12. Contact Support:

    • If none of the above steps work, consider reaching out to the manufacturer's support for further assistance or consider seeking help from a professional technician.

Remember that microphone issues can sometimes be a combination of hardware and software factors. Start with the basic troubleshooting steps and gradually move towards more advanced solutions if needed.
