Does Dell G15 5515 support Thunderbolt 3

I have a G15 5515 with NVIDIA Ge Force RTX 3060. The documentation on the web indicates that it supports a Thunderbolt 3 (USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C) port/DisplayPort. USB device can work on this port, however I can't get any Thunderport devices to work. Is Thunderbolt 3 really supported, or is it just a USB 3.2 port?

Thanks

Thanks. Dell added the lightning bolt symbol above this port on the back of the G15 5515 laptop. This is misleading since it is not a Thunderbolt port. I bought this laptop to transfert videos from an old Sony Digital 8 Camcorder. Will look for another solution...

It would have been good if you had posted a photo of that symbol. Then it would clear up any confusion. It may be that you do not have a Thunderbolt icon.

USB port symbols are confusing, because there are several that are quite similar. A lightning bolt icon can mean that the port provides PowerShare.

PowerShare charging varies according to whether you are on battery or AC, whether you are in Standby (which can run PowerShare while on battery) or Hibernate/Shut Down (which will run PowerShare only while plugged into AC), what battery thresholds you've set, etc. It can be complicated to remember it all.

This Dell document describes it in detail. https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000156341/usb-powershare-feature-on-dell-laptops

Also, on some models PowerShare works only if the external device was connected to the USB port and charging *before* the laptop was put into Standby, Hibernate or Shut Down.

Thunderbolt icon is a lightning bolt with an arrow point at the bottom, slightly different from the lightning bolt icon used for PowerShare.

The manual has no mention of Thunderbolt, and if your goal is to transfer video from an old camcorder with Thunderbolt, you've another issue:  most of these support transferring still images only over Thunderbolt.  Video cannot be transferred;  you'll need a capture device of some sort.  And even for still image transfer, it's very common to need the software supplied by the camcorder manufacturer - which in turn is unlikely to work under Windows 10 or 11.

Here is a photo of the back port of my G15 5515. Based on your description, it seems to be the symbol for a Thunderbolt port. Thanks G15 5515 back portG15 5515 back port

See reply above where I shared a photo of the port. It is port 1 in your diagram and it seems to show that it is a Thunderbolt port.

Thanks

Hello,

Hmmm you're right no wonder you are confused but the manual does not mention thunderbolt support anywhere.

@confuseduser43 They are basicly using misleading tactics on their products, that is thunderbolt logo and it should be thunderbolt compatible port, but its not, same as i bought this same laptop in god faith that it supports raid, i invested in to premium m.2 drives, installed all, it shows option for raid, but laptop is locked to not suport raid, its scam short said, sadly this is last dell product i bought on consumer base, probably will divert from some server grade stuff in future, as i dont want to be in tuch with companies wich do their buisnes this way.....
