Brand New Inspiron 15 5000 5502 Screen Flickers, Turns On And Off During Battery Use Only

Hi

I have a brand new, straight out of the box Inspiron 15 5000 5502, which when connected to power is absolutely fine, however once you take it off charge after a few minutes the screen starts to flicker and then gets progressively worse until it’s doing this constantly and is unusable. The whole screen flicks on and totally off every second in a strobe like effect.

As soon as you plug the power back in it works perfectly

I have used Support Assist to update all drivers and updates and all now are fully up to date.

I have a short video of this screen misbehaving but I’m unable to upload mov files here.

Try reinstalling the original drivers and recent updates from the Dell download page manually.  Support Assist sometimes installs desktop drivers on laptops. (My opinion--Don't use it if you are an experienced user.) Laptop drivers rarely are upgraded or changed since they are customized for your exact model. All updates must come from Dell. Drivers for your model are here.

However, if that does not solve the problem, contact support tomorrow for help.

I'd love to hear if this worked, as I was experiencing a similar issue.

No resolution on this issue as yet, we’ve tried all the troubleshooting steps and still no fix. Currently waiting on SWAP team approving a replacement (over informed SLA’s).  Really annoyed at dell for the time it’s taking to resolve delivered faulty equipment. You’d think they have done proper QA on the product before shipping and then process issues of delivered faulty equipment quicker. We’re having to go through the process like we’ve had 11 months use out of the item when we’ve received it not fit for purpose.

I'm having the exact same issue on the same laptop.

Same issue for me until the 1st automated system update took place. After that the flickering was present with/without power source connected. That last for a day then all seemed ok since. Currently waiting on a swap once these laptops are back in stock (late Feb). Very disappointed with this issue as I've always used Dell.

For the flickering resolution open the Intel graphics Command center

Then click System

Then Power

Just disable the Panel self refresh

Now the flickering will disppear.

Mark the soltuion as accepted if you find it useful.

My laptop did this straight out of the box and I contacted support on the same day it was delivered. The issue was raised through telephone/email support and I also tweeted the issue tagging support in.

Was your laptop under 30 days replacement period when swap took place?

Also could please explain me the procedure for swap in a private chat please?

BTW for replying to my post.

I am so tired of this issue.   My screen seems to have a little "bump", then the flicker starts with all the icons, text in emails, etc.   Then the screen goes black for a second or two and comes back up.  If I move the cursor, it just goes black again.   I just had to try and close what I was doing between the flickering and black screen and do a restart.  I went to the Intel Graphics control center, Settings and then Power.   I do not have the same option you listed "Panel Shelf Refresh" - the only thing I could turn off was the "Extend Battery Life for Gaming" (dynamically regulate frame rate during gameplay).  I don't play games since I use this for work (often have Outlook, FileMaker Pro, Word and Excel 365 open at the same time.    I've always relied on the Intel updates rather than doing the Dell Intel updates.  But it seems it doesn't matter which I use.  I did a Dell Intel update and had the problem so I went back and did the Intel update (even though it said to use the one from Dell).  Just didn't seem to make a difference in the problem.

I think your system is really messed up. Have it replaced or repaired as soon as possible.
