BIOS update warning: bios update failed as bios requires password. please remove password.
BIOS update warning: bios update failed as bios requires password. please remove password.
The above warning and inability to install BIOS update concerns v. 1.11.
However, no password is set in BIOS; my current BIOS version is 1.10.
Is it a bug?

Oops. Had the USB flash drive in the USB 2.0 Port. Put it in the 3.0 port and it worked as advertised.

Apparently there is a bug.
Someone posted about it this recently.

I don't use passwords on my Bios either, but you have confirmed you can get into the Bios without one?
Could the update be seeing something else blocking it, such as some sort of boot Anti-Virus?

Yes, right, thank you!
So, are we waiting for a patch - new correct version?

Thank you for your concern.
Of course, I have checked to enter BIOS without a password.
Also, there has been no change since my last no-problem update (my current version is 1.10).
My antivirus is a Total Security Bitdefender which does not mess with BIOS as far as I know.

Same issue here trying to install 1.18.3 on an alienware. How quickly are these types of things typically addressed? Thanks!

Same here on Alienware running Bitdefender A/V. Dell update says BIOS needs password, but I don't have one.

Having this very issue myself. Have never set a password on my BIOs as well.

I am not sure this is a workaround but from posts I have read if you use Dell Update to install Dell BIOS updates, this error may occur. Instead install the update directly and do not use Dell Update. Some users have had success with that approach but yes @ieee488 is spot on and it does appear to be a bug though Dell has not confirmed it to my knowledge.

Thanks for sharing!
What do you exactly mean by "direct installation" of BIOS Update (v. 1.11 in my case)?
Thank you in advance,
Panos

I also have this problem. I downloaded the driver and tried to install it manually, as you suggest, but it has the same issue. Could this have something to do with Secure Boot being enabled?

This, "BIOS fails due to password", is under investigation.
Installing a PC BIOS update from a USB thumb drive is the safest process.
How to flash the BIOS on a Dell Desktop or Notebook with a USB thumb drive
I do not install a PC BIOS update "through" any software (Dell Update Application, SupportAssist, Windows Updates, etc.). IF I install a BIOS update, it is via the above F12--> OTHER OPTIONS --> BIOS Flash Update.

The "manually update the BIOS via F12" process may be a workaround, but I'm not sure I'd call it a solution to the problem of the Dell Update software not functioning. This is the 21st century; asking regular home users to access the BIOS manually went away not long after we quit using jumpers to set the IRQ and I/O port on our ISA modems.
