Inspiron 3910, video card upgrade? #2

Inspiron 3910

Inspiron 3910

Hi All,

I'd like to add a graphic to my current Dell Inspiron 3910 desktop for video editing, but don't know which one is fit? Especially the power consumption for not overloading. Could any one provide suggestion to me as I don't know much about computer, here is my PC spec.

CPU: i3-12100

HDD: SATA 7200rpm 500gb

RAM: 1 x 8gb DDR4

Power supply: 180W

Dell service manual said GT 730 GDDR5 is one of the GPU Discrete option. But I found this card may draw around 40W Max (is there max limit for the card?). Not sure whether my current Power Supply enough or not?

And I found another Low Profile option is Radeon HD5450, it said around 20W, is it a good fit?

Thanks for any help and advise.

The 300w psu (L300EBS-00 etc.) is a proprietary Dell psu that has no known third party adapter on the market yet.  It is currently obligatory to use Dell psu for 3910.  Dell also makes 8+4+4 pin psu for other desktop model (Optiplex 7000/XPS 8950), which share 8+4 pin with 3910.  There is currently no evidence whether or not those 8+4+4 pin works for 3910.  In addition Dell makes 8+4 pin psu for Inspiron 3020 (available on Dell au site, not yet on Dell US site), which is definitely c/w 3910.  I would say the best option now is to wait for stock availability, or order overseas.  The 300w psu (DP/N T7X04) was available recently on eBay US shipping (a compatible model on eBay) but sold out.  A compatible model is available international shipping, P/N : V0YN7.  There is a chance it may be back in US stock at some time.

Dell can only speak to what Dell validated. Search the web for the part numbers.

Validated Inspiron 3910 PSU part numbers =
T7X04 300W, LiteOn, Bronze
KK2Y8 240W, LiteOn, Bronze
T685J 180W, LiteOn, Bronze

Validated Inspiron 3910 video card numbers =
7MKYT MSI Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Super, 6GB, DP/HDMI/DVI-D
4WY5P ECS Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650, 8GB, DP/HDMI/DVI-D
6KVHF ECS Nvidia GeForce GT730, HDMI/DVI-D/VGA

Another good fit, considering your PSU, would be the GT 1030 (only use the GDDR5 version).

ATI Radeon HD5450 is an old, slow, and simple entry level gpu using ancient ddr2 memory (current gpu memory use gddr5 and gddr6).  This was released in 2010. Definitely not a candidate for video editing.  The onboard integrated graphics UHD730 inside i3-12100 is 500% faster than hd5450 and scores 800% over it.

Two of the ranked best video editing discrete gpu in 2023 that are congruent with Intel 12th gen cpu technology in 3910 are RTX 3050 and GTX 1660 S (Super).  These cards require one 8 pin or 6 pin PCIe connector from psu.  You can upgrade 3910 psu to Dell oem 300w mentioned by Chris M.

@redxps630 @DELL-Chris M thank you very much for your reply!

I contacted the Dell Sales team earlier today they said there is no stock currently and asked me to search it online for the T7X04 300W power supply. However there is nothing in the market...
May I know what's the concern for buying the power supply from other brand? I understand Dell can only speak to what Dell validated, but generally is that just considered the space, input voltage(220-240V~ i'm in uk) and the connectors to board?

I found the current pc power supply connect to the motherboard by 2 plugs, 1x8pins and 1x4pins.

I do really appreciate for your help and advise.

@JOcean thank you very much for your advise!

I can find this card in Amazon and somebody said in the Q&A would suggest a minimum power of 300W PSU, is that ok to run with a 180W power supply?

I'm also curious that, what will be happened if the power supply is overloaded(is this call overload?), i.e. the required running power greater than the power supply.

I suggested the GT 1030 since, as the NVidia specs page here states, it only draws 30W. And I have seen many YouTube videos, such as here, that have similar PSUs to yours with the 1030.

This is incorrect. I took this advice and got the Nvidia GTX 1660 Super and it doesn't work because you'd need a higher end psu. Once you get a more powerful psu that is compatible with the gpu, you'll find that it has a 24 pin connector, while the computer's motherboard is an 8 pin.

The biggest issue I had with trying to upgrade the psu and gpu is that the psu ends up having a 24 pin connector while your Dell's motherboard is an 8 pin. End of the road. Whatever you can improve, it won't be by much.

The Dell Optiplex 7000 500w PSU (HU500EPS-00) fits and works with 3910. I just installed one into my 3910 recently. Just have to plug in the similar connectors and leave the others aside.
