Inspiron 3847 won't boot past Dell logo

After installing Windows updates this week, my Inspiron 3847 won't boot past the Dell logo.

First I tried pressing Del during the start up. It then showed the F2 and F12 options, but nothing happened when I pressed those keys.

Next I tried disconnecting both internal hard drives (a few years ago I replaced the HDD with a SDD which is now the system drive.). Then it showed a no boot device error found and the option to enter the BIOS. In the BIOS I was able to reset the BIOS to default and ran all diagnostics which passed.

But it still won't boot past the Dell logo. Any other ideas?

Hmmm...

Try disabling Load Legacy OPROM.  And make sure 1st Boot Device is Windows Boot Manager.

Version of Windows?

If you disconnected both internal drives, it's not surprising you'd getting a "no device" error.  PC can't boot without any drives connected. So reconnect only your boot drive and see what happens now.

If BIOS and Windows were set up to use RAID, resetting BIOS to defaults would have changed BIOS to AHCI. So see how SATA Operation is set now but don't change that setting now.

I have never set up RAID on this PC. The SDD is the boot drive. The HDD is an old drive for extra storage. This has worked fine for 3 years. It stopped working after a reboot for Windows updates.

The SSD has had some kind of problem after that. I have followed this guide: https://www.crucial.com/support/articles-faq-ssd/why-did-ssd-disappear-from-system#:~:text=A%20sudden%20loss%20of%20power,completing%20our%20power%20cycle%20procedure.

I removed the SSD and connected it to another PC with a USB disk caddy. It did not immediately read the disk, but after following those steps I could read all files on it.

However after putting it back into the Dell PC, it won't boot. If I try to boot up with both drives connected it won't boot past the Dell logo. If I unplug the SATA cable to the SDD, it will boot off a Windows DVD and I can see the contents of the other drive. I can also get into the BIOS setup.

SSD is Crucial MX500 2 TB.

SATA mode is AHCI.

Why won't the Dell PC recognise the SDD any more?

Dell typically sets BIOS to RAID and configures Windows to use RAID.   So if BIOS is set to AHCI now, that could explain things.

Before going any further, put the SSD back into the USB caddy and make a full image, including all partitions, to be safe.  Save the image on an external USB HDD.  You can use any imaging software you prefer. Macrium Reflect is a good choice, but it only comes with a 30-day free trial now.  The imaging software should also allow you to create a bootable USB stick that you'd need to restore the image, so be sure to create it and set it safely aside.

Once the SSD is imaged and boot USB is created, put the SSD back into the Inspiron 3847.  Then power on and tap F2 to open BIOS setup. Change BIOS to RAID, save the change and exit. See if PC boots from the SSD now...

Thanks for your responses, but I don't see any option to configure RAID in the BIOS.

Yea!!

Glad to have helped. And good on you for posting those BIOS screens so I was able to see the settings. Now that it's working again, take/save pics of all current BIOS screens, just in case...

For the record, was Windows Boot Manager already 1st in the boot sequence and you only had to disable Legacy OPROM?  Or did you have to change both settings?
