Hi all, can i use 1 of the 2 SATA PWR connectors to power a graphics card that requires a 6 pin power connection? Im hoping to connect a GTX 1650 super. My PSU is 290 watts. Thanks

No because tapping connectors other places DOES NOT ADD power to your POWER SUPPLY.

Optional 365 W power supply is REQUIRED

8CCF1 Nvidia GT 1030 2GB works with the 290W

this is not a standard power supply.

OEM 365w PSU =
7VK45 365w, Huntkey
T1M43 365w, Delta

365W D365EM-00

If you use a standard power supply with MODDIY adapter it has to sit outside the case or you have to modify the mounting because PSU is upside down in the bottom

thanks for the reply speedster. however, im not wanting to add power to the psu. instead I was hoping to use 1 of the sata pwr connectors to provide the additional power needed by the gtx1650 via its 6pin connector. the card needs 100watts and would draw 75watts via the pcie slot and 25watts via the 6pin which id connect to the sata pwr connector, which is also 6pin. not sure if that will work though. I've seen a video where the total system power draw with a gtx1650 super is around 200watts so the existing 290watt psu is big enough. thanks

All the power comes from the same power supply.

Adding connectors does NOT increase the total power available.

so the answer is still no.

thanks again speedstep. however my 290psu is sufficient to power a gtx1650 super i just can't connect power to the cards external 6pin connector as there is no 6pin connector from the psu so was hoping to use the spare sata pwr 6pin port on the motherboard similar to this video where he uses 2 sata power connectors to provide the external power to the graphics cards. my motherboard doesn't have these type of sata power connectors though just 2 6pin sata power connectors, of which 1 is free.

thanks

although you can use 2 sata to 6 pin adapter, you need to be mindful that the sata connectors have very small diameter wires inside designed to power low-power device namely hdd/ssd.  when you connect this to a relatively high power device such as gpu, it is possible that gpu can draw unsafe amount of current through these skinny wires and cause heating, softening/melting, or potential fire hazard.  therefore need be very cautious.  If you test the outside of connection with your hand during test and find no excessive heating, maybe you are lucky, but still not a recommended method.  Just because someone has done it in video or someone is selling the adapter does not mean it is safe.

  • thanks for the advice redxps630. I may try to go straight from the 6pin sata to 6pin on the graphics card using a male to male power extension cable. hopefully that will work.

Adding connectors does not add power.

Bare Minimum is 300W dell uses 305W for this with 150W combined power for

3.3v/5v rails. 12v 18 Amps is a redline which is why power supplys list this as absolute MAX for any single connector.

You dont have 36 AMPS on 12v and ignore other rails with a 290W power supply.

All rails matter not just 12v and the spec is COMBINED power not a single rail with a single SPEC of WATTS.

thanks for the info speedstep. I'm out of my depth here but I think I'll just stick with my gtx 1650 for now and wait till they hopefully release a new 75watt graphics card.

Please see this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exxI4Uv2AKI

I do not endorse this method but base on the power reading it still has enough headroom
