Inspiron 3470, SSD mounting options

I just ordered an Inspiron 3470 desktop with a 3.5" SATA drive that I'm planning to replace with a SSD.

It looks like my choices are a 2.5" SATA SSD or a M.2 SATA SSD. (NVMe not supported.) My question is around the mounting options for both of those. Looking at the service manual for the 3470 I see specialized parts either way.

For the 2.5" SSD it's this drive caddy:

Then for the m.2 SATA SSD it's the blue mounting widget pictured below that replaces the typical standoff/screw combination that you'd normally see:

Since I ordered the machine with a 3.5" SATA drive, I'm assuming that I won't have either of those parts. I've spent quite a bit of time searching and I can't find a part number for either.

So my questions are:

1.) What's the part number for the 2.5" caddy?

2.) Can I just use a standard 2.5" to 3.5" mounting bracket instead? (e.g. the SilverStone SDP08)

  • At first glance it appears like the answer is no. It seems the 3.5" bracket uses bottom screws so I'd need to find a different 2.5" to 3.5" adapter that has the bottom mounting screw hole available.

3.) What's the part number for that blue M.2 screw replacement mounting assembly? (Sorry, no idea what it's officially called.)

4.) Would a regular standoff/screw work in its place?

5.) Where can I go to lookup these part numbers on my own? Are they available online somewhere?

M2 Options use different parts

1x DHR6X - Spacer I think is the motherboard part.

It goes in 90 degrees out with 1/4 turn to lock into place.

@DELL-Chris M   would have more information.

The spacer does not use a screw.

The phone number to spare parts is 1-800-372-3355

Round Rock, TX

PCI-E M2 devices require thermal pad and Heatsink (M key only)

SATA M2 devices B & M key do not require a thermal pad.

Silverstone SDP09 allows you to mount the SSD into 3.5 metal enclosure that has the same mounting as ANY standard 3.5 inch drive.  That allows you to remove the HDD and replace with 2.5 SSD in the exact same place as the 3.5 drive.

Use a Dock to get the data from the old drive.

OK...for 1 and 2.. I believe the 2.5" bracket is mounted below the 3.5" bracket and should be on the system already.

The M.2 screw should already be in the system, however if it is missing try the following site. That is an M2 x 3mm screw. And no a regular standoff screw will not work.

The best place to get the parts is from Dell. The number is below.

Dell Spare Parts at 800-357-3355..have your service tag when/if you call.

That blue dohicky should be on your mother board already look in the Inspiron 3470 service manual I'm looking into fitting an SSD in there myself but I need to know which ones are compatible.

Actually, I bought an Inspiron 3470 with the 3.5" HDD option; thus, the unit shipped with the 3.5" mounting bracket only. The 2.5" mounting bracket (a proprietary Dell design) is only included if the buyer orders the SSD storage option for the unit. What's frustrating is Dell only makes its complete part catalog available to Dell certified techs. The rest of us have to slog through Dell's interminable tech support telephone system, hope the CSR has enough training to understand our request, and is actually able to locate the part we need without the part number. Why can't Dell at least provide lists of parts with its proprietary part numbers so we can actually order what we're looking for?
