Inspiron 24 5410 All-in-One - overheating issue

Greetings,

I have encountered an interesting issue with a customer's Inspiron 24 5410 All-in-One. The customer has two of these PCs mounted on a wall, using them in kiosk mode. One of them is mounted normally and the other one is rotated 90° counterclockwise. Such configuration results in overheating of the CPU.

Throughout my testing, I discovered that the overheating issue correlates with the rotation. When the PC stands normally (0° - no rotation) no overheating occurs even after thorough stress testing of its CPU, rotating it 90° clockwise also does not seem to cause any issues (temps have not risen above 60°C during 12hrs of stress testing). Only rotating it 90°  counterclockwise results in high temps of the CPU (up to 99°C) even when not stress testing. If the system is idling the temps seem to be within normal (50-60°C), but even opening a browser is enough to send it spiraling up to 100°C. That results in CPU throttle and renders the station useless (low performance or self-shutdown).

There must be some kind of self-feeding heat loop when the station is rotated that leads to CPU temperatures rising and cooking the CPU.

I would not classify this as engineering/design oversight but it is an interesting "feature" you have to deal with if you want to mount this particular model in "portrait" mode.

The solution is obvious. To rotate it the other way (90° clockwise) since that position does not result in overheating.
