Dell Inspiron 3880 boot sequence and UEFI

I just purchased a Dell Inspiron 3880.  I would like to be able to boot from USB or CDROM but I can't and when I looked closer at the Bios I don't see any options for it.  I also placed a circle in the area which I had seen previously on other Dells Uefi options.  Can someone please advise how I can add my USB and CDROM for the Dell Inspiron 3880?  I have contacted support today and was transferred three times and in my opinion is very weak technical support as they have no knowledge what bios is and they want to dismiss me right away, very frustrating...

Hi Ron, thank you for the heads up on Rufus as I was able to boot to a USB.  I use a different ISO boot program and it didn't work.

To sum things up disable secure boot in the BIOS to be able to boot to a USB device or CDROM.  Create your image with RUFUS that will contain your ISO and when you boot in post by hitting F12 constantly you will see your device in the list.

Thanks again!

Thanks for the response and its interesting and I find it odd that a Manufacturer would have a customer add a boot option...  This is a start but I wonder would you would enter in for a USB as they only advise how to do it by adding a CD-ROM?

"PciRoot (0x0)/Pci (0x1F, 0x2)/Sata(0x3,0x0,0x0)/CD"

Thanks again for the quick response as I guarantee others will be curious on how to do this...

I tried the changes as per what the KB advised to do and it didn't work...

I have tried what you have suggested with no luck...  I think the KB article is very close in resolving the issue but it doesn't give an option for a CD-ROM or a USB when adding the devices like it advises in the article for my inspiron 3880.

Thanks for the suggestions...

Did you try disabling Secure Boot in BIOS setup?

Did you try plugging the bootable USB in with power off and then booting? Immediately start tapping F12. When the F12 menu opens there should be the option to boot from USB.

@Cooper_2013

Is USB Boot Support enabled in BIOS? It's listed as a System Configuration option in the Service Manual.

And with that enabled, if you plug a bootable USB in before powering PC on and open the F12 menu, there's no option to boot from USB?

Dell technical support has closed the incident without consulting me as I still don't have a fix.  Dell's technical support and customer service was terrible!!!  I received more feedback on tangible solutions to try than support and to everyone in the community it's greatly appreciated for the assistance...

@RoHe

With USB boot support enabled you still see no option at boot screen to load to USB.  I now am the proud owner of multiple Inspirion 3880 with the same issue.

It's Brutal!!!  Dell didn't do enough regression testing before releasing this model in a consumer/production environment...

@Cooper_2013  - Don't think you're doing it correctly.

All you should have to do is plug the bootable USB into the PC while it's off, assuming USB boot support is enabled in BIOS. Then power on and start tapping F12.  You shouldn't need look in BIOS setup (F2) again. The F12 boot menu should have the USB boot option listed, assuming the USB is bootable.

BTW: What version of BIOS is installed? The latest is v1.3.1.  Note: v1.2.0 added a new UEFI Boot Path Security option which will also be in the latest version. Have you looked at that new option's settings?

BTW2: How are you preparing the USB to make it bootable, using Rufus (free) or something else?

Just bought Dell 3880 and I want to wipe the windows OS and install a Sophos UTM firewall on the box.  I purchased this computer for the sole purpose of being a firewall.  I have the Sophos ISO and used Rufus to create a bootable USB.  In Rufus, I’ve chosen MBR Partition, Target system is BIOS (or UEFI-CSM), File system = FAT 32 (I did try NTFS, but Rufus says NTFS is not compatible with this ISO).

I have not setup Windows on the box.

After reading many posts, I made the following changes on the bios page (bios is 1.2.0 – I do realize there is a 1.3.1 version available).

Boot sequence; created another boot sequence for the ports

Integrated nic=uncheck enable uefi network

Usb config=check enable usb boot support, enable front, enable rear ports

Secure boot enable=uncheck

Then

  1. Unplugged computer
  2. Inserted usb
  3. Plugged in computer, powered on, hit f12 for boot sequence
  4. The boot manager indicates boot mode is set to UEFI; secure boot is OFF, PTT is on
  5. I see under the UEFI Boot section the USB boot option I created
  6. I choose the usb boot option I created, then I get to a Dell SupportAssist | Onboard Diagnostics page indicating that ‘no bootable devices found’

I’m coming to the conclusion that its just not possible to boot to a non uefi device on this box.  If so, Dell can expect to have this unit returned to them.

Assuming this is the case, does anyone know if there are other Dell product lines that have a more ‘friendly’ BIOS… vs. the consumer oriented Inspiron product line?

Thanks for any guidance!

@b33rlite -

Just some guesses:

Does PTT have to be off in BIOS, not on, as you indicated?

And what about the PPI and the SMM Security Mitigation settings in BIOS?
