Dell G5 Gaming Desktop and psu/gpu

Hi All, I bought the i7-9700  gtx 1650 version under the belief it was upgradeable. The problem I see is with the 460 watt PSU that came with it, I have a RTX 2070 super that I want to use though this requires 550 watts according to nvidia. I also noticed there are RTX 2080 versions of the G5. What PSU do these use? Because surely it must be more then 460 watts as they need 650 watts. In short, I want to use my RTX 2070 super, what is the solution.

Thanks all

Nvidia recommended psu for RTX2070 super is 650W.  The card needs 6+8 pin power connector.  The card has a TDP 215W.  i7-9700 TDP is 65W.  Not sure how Nvidia calculates the recommended system power.  I would say try the Dell 460W first. Maybe it is enough and Nvidia exaggerates its recommendation. If you found out you need more power, then you would need to figure out Dell proprietary 8 pin ATX pinout and mod connectors. This may not be an easy project.

This Mobo looks like a 6 pin. There are adapters for this on ebay but not specifically for a G5. I wonder what is used for the RTX 2080 on the G5? Unless the card is considerably underclocked. Techincally speaking if it's the same PSU that I have (460w) running a true RTX 2080 then logic would suggest a 2070 super should be ok. But, I need something official as selling a desktop as upgradeable is misleading when it's not.

Also my card specifically says 550w though Nvidia says 650w

Yes it is 6 pin. You are correct. Also two EPS 4 pin for cpu. Uncertain when to plug both 4 pin and when only one is sufficient. 460W is highest spec in configuration. Occasionally Dell has higher rating psu that only Dell community manager may know.  As to 550W vs 650W, I have seen discrepancy between Nvidia and other vendor recommendations. The hunch is Nvidia official recommendation tends to be a bit exaggerated to allow for all possible builds. Nvidia sometimes has small print disclaimer that prebuilt system may need less power. As to Dell marketing upgradeable pc, it is marketing and Dell pc almost always has limitations one way or the other. But Dell users often are ingenious in figuring out ways if there is a will. Part of the fun lies there, otherwise everyone just builds their own w little challenge and plenty user friendliness out there.

This question has been asked millions of times in some Asian market, where they question the feasibility of RTX2080 with stock 460W PSU. Dell official reply is: based on its calculation it’s sufficient to run i9-9900K and RTX2080 at the same time w/460W PSU,(at least on paper it seems all add up)

I appreciate all of the responses, I am beginning to feel confident that this may be just fine. After extensive research I've not been able to see this question from the Asian market at all. Still I'd like to hear from a Dell official to be honest as these RTX 2080's may be manufactured by dell, I mean the Stock built in GTX 1650 has no external power supply apart from the PCI slot. The PSU actually has both a 8p and 6p connector hanging loosely so that I guess is a sign that it is made for such a configuration.

This was a really quick buy from me as a gamer and it was registered as upgradeable. After 4 weeks quarantine and 2 months overseas I just didn't have the energy to build my own when I got home. It really is a nice PC from Dell and I am happy with it, Just the GPU is way under what I'd use and the 2070 super is just sitting there. I like the case and performance, I did get a good heatsink on the CPU.

Ok I won't hear a word from dell without the service tag, Of course I'm at work and don't have this.

@Credit 00  I have the G5 with the 460W power supply, the 9700K processor option (same TDP as the i9) and the OEM nVidia 2070 Super. Runs fine. I suspect a 2080Ti might be out of the question, but Dell sells both the 2070 Super and the 2080 (non-Super) as options for this machine, so I suspect we're within the power envelope.

And for what it's worth, I also have a 4TB mechanical HD and a 1TB SATA SSD installed in addition to the stock NVMe drive. Machine is running stable on the stock 460W power supply. I'm sure it's near its limit, but I'm not particularly concerned about exceeding it since nothing else is going in the machine and I probably won't be upgrading the GPU to anything requiring more wattage any time soon.

those oem 460W psu are in short supply now.  If it dies you would not find a replacement soon.  Dell makes it so proprietary now that its pin-out is still a mystery.

@Credit 00  - Keep in mind this is mainly a user-to-user forum and isn't the way to contact Dell Tech Support.

The automated query from Dell for the Service Tag doesn't necessarily mean you'll hear anything from Dell about this issue here. Their bot asks for the Service Tag so they can track whether the PC is under warranty or not, amongst other things...

Dell doesn't manufacture any video cards. They use an OEM video card that's made to their specs by some outside manufacturer, and it's quite likely different from a retail version of the same card.  Even retail versions of the same card from different manufacturers can have different specs. So you may not be able to directly compare what people may be saying about a retail card with your Dell OEM card.

Thanks for all of your replies, I’m going to install it today. I also have 8 more gigs of ram. I also noticed that Dell seem to sometimes reply here, I’m in Australia and automatically was transferred to North America from the site after saying I was in Australia so I wasn’t expecting much from Dell in the end, we’re almost a day ahead. Sometimes the community is the way to go, I did get my answer.

And it's all done, huge card but it's running fine. Played Just cause 3 in Ultra everything for hours at 1440P, no problem and the temp reached about 55.

@Credit 00 @Hey, I have the exact specs minus gpu and want to upgrade to 2070 super even though I only have the Dell 460 psu. Still running fine?

June 29th, 2020 20:00

Yeah it's still running fine, Spent hours and hours on GTA5, Wish dell wasn't so secretive about their specs as I'd still prefer a more powerful PSU. Be very careful about the size of the actual card as space is limited. Has anyone figured out the pinouts yet? Even though the machine is fine i'd rather get more power.

@Credit 00 Thats awesome, makes me feel alot better, thanks for the reply. If you don't mind me asking, assuming you have the same G5 case, which 2070 super did you go with that fit?
