All In One - SD Micro Card Reader - Works sometimes and others can't be found until you used Device Manager to kick it

All in One, Win 10 Pro

When inserting a SD Micro card Windows 10 doesn't recognize a card has been inserted.

But using Device Manager and then Scan for Hardware Changes the device is found and works UNTIL you remove it and insert another micro card (actually it may work for more than one but at some point its going to quit working).

Starting Device Manager and Scan for H/W changes works.

The user is not willing to do these few steps.

In Device Manager are SD Card readers listed under "Storage Controllers"?  I do not have a Memory listing in Device Manager that I saw on another post.  Should I disable the drivers, delete, and then let Windows refind the device.

Would getting a USB card read be the easiest way.   $20 from Amazon.

Thanks for any ideas.  This machine is used for probably 5 SD cards a week but they are vital to workflow.

Thanks again.

Always include exact PC model in your posts...

SD card readers are USB devices so, for starters:

  1. Open Device Manager
  2. Expand list under USB
  3. Double-click each USB entry and look for a Power Management tab
  4. Uncheck the box "Allow PC to turn off..."
  5. Repeat for all USB entries with a Power Management tab
  6. Now do same for all Human Interface Devices listed in in Device Manager with a Power Management tab
  7. Reboot

Let us know if that helps. If not, there are other power plan settings you may have to change...

@TechACE  - You marked my post as the Solution, so can we assume unchecking that "Allow PC to turn off..." box for all USB and HID devices solved the problem?

We did the step to "allow PC to turn off...".  We also deleted all related devices and had Windows find the drivers for the devices again.  And we also downloaded the driver (same one) from the vendor driver support and reinstalled (.EXE).  So your idea led us to the others but, to find out where the issue was, should have done each step one at a time.   (but when you're up to your neck in alligators...)

The issue (not recognizing a inserted micro card) was fixed for a longer period of time.  I understand the problem is back and the user does not want to do the steps of 1)device manager and 2) scan for hardware changes.  This fixes the problem each time a different micro card is inserted but after a card is removed the next one is not found.  Change that to either 1 card removed or several then it will break.

So we are going to move computers around and put that one where a card reader is not needed.

Thanks for help.

If unchecking that box in Device Manager didn't help, you may now need to change some other Power plan settings:

Open the Windows Power & Sleep screen. Click Additional Power Settings. On next screen identify the active Power plan and click Change Plan Settings. On next screen, click Change Advanced Power Settings.

On that last screen, disable Hibernation, Hybrid Sleep, USB Selective Suspend, and PCI Express Link State Management. Be sure to save the changes to the Power plan and then reboot.
