Adding RAM to Inspiron 3650

I have an Inspiron 3650, with 8 GB of RAM, and would like to add another 8 GB. I've looked online and have seen posts saying that it's not a good idea to add RAM from a different manufacturer, because it could cause problems.

Yesterday, I downloaded CPU-Z and according to the SPD tab of  this program, I have 8 GB of RAM, manufactured by SK Hiynix, DDR3L, PC3-12800 (800 MHZ), part number HMT41GU6FR8A-PB.

The specs in my manual say my RAM is 1600 MHz. Should I trust what CPU-Z says and buy this RAM or is this wrong?

If this isn't right, what would work in my Inspiron 3650?

Would it be better to just buy a 16 GB module, and discard the 8 GB module that's already in there?

I checked today, and CPU-Z did identify the RAM module correctly. I had some trouble getting the RAM back in the slot (probably didn't line up the notch right), but my friend got it in right.

Now I know what I need to match this with. Thank you.

I would remove the current ram and look at the manufacturer label and then get one that matches it.  you will probably see the same spec read out by CPUZ.

just make sure what you get is DDR3L-1600 or PC3L-12800 (L for low voltage) because DDR3 (regular voltage) would not work in 3650.

Re: PC3-12800 (800 MHZ), part number HMT41GU6FR8A-PB. The specs in my manual say my RAM is 1600 MHz.

this is correct, because it is DDR3 meaning double data rate.  Double Data Rate 3 Memory (DDR3 SDRAM) is a type of  (SDRAM) with a high bandwidth ("double data rate") interface.

1600 is double of 800.  they are both correct.  PC3-12800 is DDR3-1600.

2x8 GB of matched ram is dual channel which has better bandwidth than single 16 GB.

I thought about removing the module and looking at it, and plan to do that tomorrow. I was aware of the difference between DDR3 and DDR3L, and knew I needed the low voltage RAM. What you said about the 800 MHz makes sense, and I thought that might be the case, and now I know that it is.

If I can't get a 8GB module that matches what I already have, I will go with 2 8 GB modules. Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it.

user validated 1x8 gb in 3650

Hynix HMT41GU6BFR8A-PB 1x8GB
Hynix HMT41GU6DFR8A-PB 1x8GB

it is possible cpuz does not read out the exact Hynix model number, for example, missing the letter B after 41GU6. You will see what the whole model number reads when you take it out.  It is not hard to find an exact match.  I have seen for example a few HMT41GU6BFR8A-PB on eBay.
