How To: Restore an Image Assist image into a Virtual Machine

To restore an image into a VM, to test it or reuse as it a base - here's how.

First - Create an ISO of the DIA USB Drive

  1. Login to TechDirect to download Image Assist
  2. Unzip DIA, then modify the ImageAssist.exe.Config file by changing the false value to true for the following line:   <add key="SkipApplicationLaunchValidations" value="True" />
  3. On the Image Assist home page, click Settings and click Additional Tools.
  4. In the Create USB Drive or ISO File card, click CREATE. The Create USB Drive or ISO file page is displayed.
  5. Select the following options:
  • Bootable ISO - to create a bootable USB drive
    • By default, the ISO is saved in the C:\ drive. To change the path, click BROWSE and select a folder.
    • Click CREATE ISO

Last - Mount that ISO as the CD-ROM in your VM, boot to it and use the RESTORE tool to apply the WIM to your VM's hard drive.

Thanks,

Tyler
