Dell Image Assist and SATA SSD Compatibilty (iastore.sys bsod)

Hello All,

Encountered an issue while using our bootable Dell Image flash drive (10.0.8.4) drive on an older PC. This Dell Image assist flash drive works fine on other PCs.

I was getting a iastore.sys bsod when booting to the Dell image assist on an Optiplex 7040 SSF running the latest BIOS. The issue seems to occur when we have only a SATA-based SSD hard drive in the machine. If we put in an NVME drive, Dell Image Assist boots up and we can image the PC fine. Is there a limitation on the Dell Image Assist in supporting older machines using SATA drives?

Dell Image Assist is a very useful tool. As a fellow user, I will share my experience.

I'd like to share my experience. In my case, using Dell Image Assist (DIA) on PCs with different storage interfaces – SATA (Precision 7820 Tower) and NVMe (Precision 3660 Tower) – led to varied results. The conclusion is that DIA utilizes Microsoft's Windows PE system. With the newer versions of DIA, I found that the necessary storage drivers for SATA were missing.

The solution I found was twofold: For older PCs that don't use NVMe, use an older version of DIA. Alternatively, for the new DIA, you can manually add drivers to Windows PE. I ended up using the older version of DIA to resolve my issue.

If you're interested in customizing Windows PE, detailed information is available on the official Microsoft site. This might be a good option for those who enjoy engineering challenges.

I hope this share is helpful.

Hey @AtsushiCafe , Thank you for your insight and your experience with this! I will do what you did if we do need to image more machines that are SATA-based. Thankfully, we're phasing them out slowly due to hardware age.
