Viewing Folders on a LUN from 2 Windows 2003 Servers

Hi

We have 2 windows 2003 SP2 servers that can both see the sam LUN on our Clarion CX300 SAN. One of the servers is our main file server the other is our backup server. We use backup exec 11D. (Not sure if that is relevant) When we first migrated all of our folders and data onto the file server the backup server could see all of the same files and folders.

However, now when I add a new folder onto the File server when I try to view that folder from the backup server I can not see it.

Likewise If I create a folder on the backup server on the LUN that is shared the file server can not see that folder.

I am also getting a number of issues with regards to folders becoming corrupt and not being able to see what is in those folders or to even be able to delete the corrupt folder.

Can anyone suggest what is going wrong.

We are very new to SAN infrastructures. Is it wrong to allow 2 windows servers to see the same LUN. Is this what is causing the problem?

I wanted the backup server to see the same LUN as the main file server to take advantage of being able to backup over fiber.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Yes it's wrong to have 2 different servers that access the same shared LUN if there is nothing that coordinate writes from the two hosts.

Right now you are simply corrupting data.

Every host have its own cache so when you create a folder you are creating something in the cache of your host. This will not go to the disks 'till you force a flush of the cache or when the cache is full or when you unmount the filesystem.

If you want to have an "image" of your data to show to the backup host, please ask your TC and he will guide you and show you all the available choices. But please stop ASAP to share the same lun between two different hosts not being part of a cluster :-)

Kevan,

check to see if your clariion is licensed for Snapview ..with snapview you will be able to create a snapshot/clone of the file server lun, mounted it on the backup server and spin it to tape. No need for cluster services for what you are trying to do.

Thank you for both of your replies.
I have stopped sharing the LUN between 2 servers and just hope we have not done to much damage already.

I will investigate Snapview and other mirroring technologies.

i would recommend a further check on the data on the file server to make sure that noting is currupted now.. That will confirm that you wont have any problems further.

In unix we do a file system check and there are more possibilties for a data lose during/after those test. Also you may have to check when do u have a successful backup before the possible corruption (test restore on a temporay location). I mean you have to be ready for a resore..

Unix fsck = windows chkdsk ;-)
