turn on the ¿D¿ bit on the FA.

Do I need to make the FA offline to set the D bit?

No either if you use symmask set_hba flags feature or if you run a symconfigure change :D

symconfigure will FAST-IML the port if needed (but you won't notice a fast-IML with properly configured timeouts on your hosts).

it's like really really fast reboot, hosts never notice it. Are you sure all of the hosts connected to this FA are compatible with the "D" flag ?

I bet you know what "fast" means ;-)

IML is the internal name for "reboot". When you change the binfile the box will issue a "fast reboot" of all processors since they have to "rediscover" the new (changed) configuration.

IML = Initial Memory/Microcode Load

dynamox setting the D flag was suggested by the engineering team. I have no idea what the reason for setting the flag? Any one know why is it used?

if i were you i would check required flags for each OS connected to this FA, i would not enable it just because they said to do so. What works for one OS may cause issues for another. You can use E-Lab Navigator to get the required flags for each platform.

Hosts doing active IO most certainly do notice it - at least all of mine do!

Hi Mcowger, welcome to our support forums. Please don't forget introducing yourself in the coffee break :-)

If your host notices fast IMLs probably the driver isn't properly configured.

What do you mean by "all of mine do"? What happens when a storage port reboots ?? What OS are you talking about ??

All recommendations I’ve seen say to reboot the box after enabling flags on the FAs. You can enable that flag just for the hosts the really need it ..using symmask hba_flag command ..but you still need to bounce the box.

I have several Red Hat Linux hosts that are currently connected to the San but we forgot to set the D bit on the Fa.

What is the impact to the hosts if I enable it on the Fa's after the fact? Do I have to shutdown the servers to make this change?
