too many devices mapped to front end director
Hi all,
Not sure this is the right place to ask.
I was trying to map some standard volumes to a FA port, and the error message received during validating was "too many devices mapped to front end director". I had since mapped the devices to another FA port.
However my understanding is each FA port can hold up to 255 devices. The problematic FA port has about 170 devices, and even with the additional devices, it will not reach the limit of 255. The other FA port on the same director has a bit over 200 devices.
May I know what is the limit of the devices that can be mapped to a director?

knowlegde base article emc108287 deals with this issue. Checking the symapi log will tell you exactly the number that you are restricted to for your uCode level. just remember that when mapping devices if they are meta members you need to include these into your count.
also the command
symcfg -sid xxx list -FA x -P y -address -available will give you the answers you need.

Root cause:
In calculating the the maximum number of devices that can be attached to a particular processor on an FA, it is not just the meta head that is counted. Per the Symmetrix DMX Product Guide:
"using metadevices will reduce the number of host-visible volumes for a given number of devices (Symmetrix Devices) configured to the Fibre Channel front-end director; that is, each member of the metadevice will be counted to the allowed limit of devices configured to a Fibre Channel front-end director."
Fix:
Solutions Enabler 6.4 will include fields at the bottom of the symcfg list -FA xx -p y -available -address output to indicate how many devices (including meta members) are mapped to the FA.

Only 4096 devices can be mapped per FA. And these devices are hypers. This is for both the ports on a processor of FA.
Means that if you are using 4aA and 4aB then total number of hypers whihc can be mapped are 4096.
This is not 4096 meta but Hypers

I'm pretty sure it's NOT 4096 hypers, but 4096 symdevs ! There's a big difference between the 2 !!
In RAID1 2 hypers make up a symdev, in 3RAID5 4 hypers make up a symdev and in 7RAID5 8 hypers make up a symdev. A hyper or slice is simply a small piece of 1 physical spindel which you cannot address from a host.
