timefinder snap on DMX

Hi
I know the process of snap creation/activation/termination. But I wondering can we have mutiple snap sessions to the same source and same target with only one session active at a time. I know this can be done on a clariion. but want to know if its doable on a symmetrix. multiple point in time copies not different vdevs but for same vdev

thanks

not sure if i understand. So you have one source and you want to create multiple point in time copies using VDEVs ?

Yes, EMC call it Multi BCV for Symmetrix.
but it is only one Source to Multi targets.

check in TimeFinder documentation for the above concept

ok just to make it clear, in clariion we create one snapshot and start multiple sessions of the same source device for different point in time sessions. The we can attach this snapshot to any one of those point in time sessions and activate it and access the data.

Can we have something created for sessions without point to which vdev it need to used but later attach that vdev to that session.

Uhmm..create clone of standard device and then attach multiple VDEVs to this clone ? Not sure if that's what you are after.

If I understand you question correctly you are not able to do this (at least there is no way I know of to do it).

Let me try to explain an example of what I think you want to do and let me know if I'm translating it s host to be able to access that point in time of 00A

Does this sound right to you? If so, I think your only way to do it would be with multiple VDEVs. One for each point in time to be exact. You would then mask in the appropriate VDEV for the point in time you wanted to access.

Well, someone else may have some other ideas, but that's the best I can give you from my experience.

Allen,
That was exactly what I was thinking. So looks like there no way without using multiple vdevs and remasking those to the hosts.

Thanks all for your inputs/thoughts....

what are you trying to do ? Is this for backup purposes ?

It's not for backup purpose. Just was checking if something similar can be do able. I didn't know we need to associate a vdev inorder to create a session. Thought we could just change the session using the same vdev for different point in time data. since the session creation requires to specify a vdev, then we need to mask different vdevs for different point in time copies.
