PPME for Active-Active Cluster
Hi,
I have a cluster which is Active-Active and it has oracle rac on it. I know that for cluster enviornment we need to shut donw one passive node and do the migration. But here I have two active nodes and I like to know the procedure for that. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

Hello
There is no offically supported method for using PPME in a active-active cluster with both nodes kept up and operational.
Having said that there is an unofficial method.
1) make sure that neither side can fail over to the otherside
2) migrate one side only
3) when complete reboot the migrated side
4) shutdown alternate node
5) remask so both nodes can only see new devices
6) bring up alternate node
repeat as necessary for alternate node(s)
This should work - the shutdown of the alternate node is required so the host can rescan at boot time the new devices and recognise them as clustered devices.
Note this is a workaround to the requirement that all nodes should be shutdown except the node carrying out the migration and as such is not recommended.
Also a full backup should be taken before you start.

PPME might not be the best option for this. If your using Oracle ASM (automated storage management) to share the drives with RAC. It's pretty easy to do a migration with ASM, add all new luns from new array, use ASM to mirror, then removed the old luns. I did this just recently with about 200TB.. no outage or impact to customers. You can even set the priority to control how agresive you want the move to be (we used the lowest so we didn't adversly impact performance).
