How do I prevent my monitor going into power saving mode?

My monitor keeps entering power saving mode mid use. I can temporarily fix the problem by turning my PC off and back on, but it's getting irritating. I am currently using a alienware x51 r2 desktop and a Dell e228wfp monitor. I know these are older models which may or may not contribute to my issue. I have tried everything that I know of and nothing has worked.
