USB 2 port failure XPS8910

I bought my XPS 8910 Dec. 2016. USB 2 port at the back failed Aug. 2017. New motherboard fitted under warrenty. Dec 2017 USB2  has failed again . Engineer fitted new motherboard but computer would not start up. Previous motherboard fitted all working but not the USB port. Engineer coming again next week, but I think motherboard will fail again. Seems that the Bios on the motherboard is being corrupted immediately and that the fix is to remove and reinsert the battery which is underneath? I remember that the engineer in Aug. had same problem with computer not starting and it took him ages to sort out. He did go deeper into the works so maybe this is what he did? Not hopeful that  I wiil get a resolution. I am worried that I need a at least one functioning USB2 to go into Safe Mode, is this correct? Should I worry or just use the USB 3 ports instead?

Thanks I saw this. I will try tomorrow and I am using the USB 3  in the meantime.

Version of Windows?

There are a number of other threads with exactly this same problem on the XPS 8910.

Some users say that connecting a USB2 hub to a rear USB2 port and connecting mouse and keyboard through the hub is a work-around for this problem. You could try using a USB2 hub and see if you can boot into Safe Mode.

Connecting the mouse and keyboard to rear USB3 ports is another work-around.

Post back and let us know if you can boot in Safe Mode using a USB2 hub for mouse and keyboard.

That is very useful info and could help other users with this problem.
