My UBS is hubless!!!

Hey Guys --

Here I am, living in Hawaii. Should be enjoying the warm weather on a winter afternoon but, alas, my Dell XpsR400 is giving me problems....

I tried using a Belkin 4-port USB hub to hold more devices -- tired of switching cables with the 2 hubs available on the 'puter -- but when I installed the thing, it asked for all kinds of driver stuff and when all was said and done, my 'puters USB ports don't work. Under Device Manager it says that the USB root hub is giving me problems...

Here's the rundown under Microsoft System Information for the USB...

"USB Root Hub, USB, This DDevice Has a Problem: Code=2(0x2), Device failure: Try changing the driver for this device, If that doesn't work, see your hardware documentation.

Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\enum\USB\ROOT_HUB\PCI&VEN_8086.......

Alloc resources,Forced resources, Boot resources, Filtered resources, Basic resources: None

Driver: USB\0001

Driver Date: 5-11-1998

Driver: usbhub.sys, file version: 4.90.3000.1"

I've tried removing the driver with device manager and reinstalling -- when I come to the part where it says to install the Win98 CD for the usbhub.sys file, the 'puter can never find the file on the CD. I've tried downloading the usbhub.sys file and installing that, but the problem persists.

Anyone got any ideas? I need to access my external drives and usb plotter, but have been stuck here at the computer searching the vast internet for answers, with none to be found to solve my dilemma. I'm debating whether I should take my computer in to church tomorrow and have the "usb demon" exorcised....

Thanks!

Lance, sulking and still searching for answers in Hawaii....

You're not going to get much sympathy from those of us stuck on the mainland. Anyway, I'm no expert on USB controllers, but here are a couple of resources which may assist you. I particularly think the Intel solutions most apply (disregard the camara stuff),  but you got to think someone who calls himself the USB man might also know a thing or to. Hope you find this useful.

Thanks Texas Tom--

I'll try those sites out. Now I've heard of Ultra-man, Super-man and Spider-man but I don't think I've ever run into USBman -- what kind of super-powers does he have? 24-foot cables that can tie up crime-cavorting fiends with a snap of his wireless mouse?

No, he simply disables you and prevents you from playing with your toys!

Hmmmm,

Normally I'd laugh at that one, but it hits a little too close to home!
