Message: "Alert! Air temperature sensor not detected" displayed at boottime. Dell OptiPlex 755

After cleaning the inside of my Dell OptiPlex 755 midi tower PC, I have the issue displaying the following message at boot time: "Alert! Air temperature sensor not detected".

Have tried to unplug/replug the fan, reset, power off, etc etc. but the error keeps getting up when rebooted.

I have read in other forum postings that this error could be caused by eather:

1) a broken air temperature sensor in the front fan;

2) a broken air temperature on the front I/O card (the little card which provides the plugs for the front USB jacks, headphone and microphone jacket)

Now, what I need to know is what I need to replace to fix this issue. So, either the temperature sensor, or the front I/O card (or even both?)

All other postings regarding this alert message where related to different machines and different postings so at this moment I am confused what to replace in my system. The system does not have any warranty anymore so unfortunately I cannot contact Dell technical support.

Can anyone provide me an answer what to replace and where to get it at a reasonable price? I am located in The Netherlands so shippings costs could be relevant.

Please send tips or helpfull information to my email address: <ADMIN NOTE: Email id removed per privacy policy>

Thanks,

Mathijs

Hi Mathijs,

The air temperature sensor that Dell installs on systems works without any user interaction. There is no need to turn it on or off or to configure any settings. The sensor comes configured for optimal running configurations no matter what climate you use your computer in.

However, if the desktop halts with an “Alert! Air Temperature sensor not detected” Message During Startup, one of the solutions is to "Reseat the Thermal Diode Power Cable".

Please click on the link below for steps to reseat the Thermal Diode Power Cable. Read the Safety Information in the same link prior to opening the system chassis. Dis-assemble the system chassis only if you are comfortable doing so.

Please reply if you  have further queries.

Hi,

I have followed the instructions in the link you provided. I opened the case and removed the front IO card to inspect to see where the "Thermal Diode Power Cable" resides. (as described in the procedure). But unfortunately, there is no Thermal Diode Power Cable on the IO card. And I am pretty sure there never was one. I did not notice any loose cables or anything. It seems like there is not even a jack to insert it to on the IO card - there is only one jack and that is a pretty big one (see attached photos)

You can see it on the pictures of my IO card, I have included in this message: could you tell me where the Thermal Diode Power cable jack (connection) resides on this IO card?

I removed the big cable though, then reseated it again, but unfortunately at reboot the same errors occurs (Alert! Air Temperature Sensor not detected).

Do you have any follow up comments, or new tips/ideas?

Any other tips from other forum members are also welcome.

Thanks for your tip. However,

I have come to the following conclusion:

There is small chip on the upper left side of the front IO card, which I have damaged accidentally when cleaning the inside of the machine.

Temporary replacing the card with another IO card (from another machine) did resolve the error. (no error message Alert! Air temperature sensor not found).

However, I am now looking for another new/used IO card, to replace the item in the machine permanently.

Unfortunately, the spare part is available (I have spoken with Dell customer service in the Netherlands), BUT only to business clients :emotion-6:

Dell unfortunately does not sell spare parts to non-business customers :emotion-7::emotion-6: (that is what was told by the Dutch representative).

The spare part number is TP004.

I am very disappointed, am not sad, not angry, but I am very disappointed....:emotion-45::emotion-6::emotion-9:

The place that seems to have failed could be on the panel OR on the ribbon cable.

Thanks for the info.

The failure is on the panel to be exact: the chip on the marked R8 and R7 is damaged - cable is OK (tested with another card : problem was resolved).

I still think it's a pitty that Dell itself doesn't support non-business clients in delivering spare parts.. :( :(
