Making sense of CPU & Motherboard part descriptions
I am trying to plan out potential upgrades to my system (an Inspiron 530 purchased in March 2009). Viewing my system configuration, the part descriptions aren't the type of info I'm able to "interpret".

So, I'm pretty sure I have the FoxConn G33M02 (will confirm with CPU-Z). The foxConn website indicates Max RAM of 8GB on the motherboard (http://www.foxconnchannel.com/product/Motherboards/detail_spec.aspx?ID=en-us0000319). Yet, my system information on dell says "Max 4GB". Is the Dell site saying that because the system configuration is with Vista 32-bit?
What I'm thinking of as a possible upgrade route is:
--If my processor supports 64-bit OS (and I believe it does...will use CPU-Z to confirm).
--Upgrade to Windows7, 64-bit.
--Upgrade RAM from 3GB to whatever I can afford past 4GB.
Does this seem reasonable?

To find the info, on the processor and motherboard, try using CPU-Z, it's a free small utility.
The 530 systems were build with two different models of motherboards.
If your 530 was purchased with a Core 2 Duo processor and a 300w power supply, this system usually has either a 0RY007/G679R/CU409 [FoxConn G33m02] motherboard, that only supports Core 2 Duo, Pentium Dual-Core and Celeron processors.
If you have a Quad 4 processor and a 350w power supply, you have the 0FM586 [FoxConn G33m03] motherboard.
The 0FM586 motherboard can be used for both Quad 4 & Core 2 Duo processors.

Thanks Bev. I didn't notice at first but my original post actually had a lot more to it...not sure why it got cut off. I did try and post the specific part numbers, but you seem to know the big picture on the 530 line!
I'll take a look at CPU-Z...definitely sounds like it will provide me what I need. It's just frustrating trying to interpret what the following mean...
"D782J Processor, E5200, 2.5, 2MB Wolfdale, 65W, M0"
and
"WN585 INSTRUCTION..., DEVIATE L6 TO L5+, Pentium 4 Prescott DT, 3.0GHZ, 1 MEGB, 800FSB..."
Been a long time since I was building systems back in the 486 days. Sadly, now, I can only say I recognize E5200 as my processor (and I've now looked that up), but the whole "Pentium 4 Prescott DT" was a bit confusing. Assuming that's my motherboard, I'll see if I can link that up with the FoxConn info you provided via CPU-Z.
Thanks again!

You are welcome.
I did find THIS reference about the "WN585 INSTRUCTION..., DEVIATE L6 TO L5+, Pentium 4 Prescott DT, 3.0GHZ, 1 MEGB, 800FSB", but it does not help very much.

Yes, it sounds reasonable, but before upgrading to Win 7, you should first check Dell's Windows 7 upgrade site HERE

So, CPU-Z is picking up this information (more or less confirming prior discussion):
--Intel Pentium E5200 - Wolfdale, Socket 775 LGA. Dual-Core CPU E5200 @ 2.5ghz
--Motherboard: Dell Inc. Model 0RY007 , A01. Intel P35/G33/G31 Rev. A2

If you have a floppy drive connector on the motherboard, then it's a 530.

The 530s [Slimline] has a Dell/FoxConn G33m02 motherboard and this does not support any core 2 Quad processors, only the only Core 2 Duo, Pentium Dual Core and Celeron processors.
The following are supported:-
Intel Celeron Processor 420 (1.6 GHz, 800 FSB)
Intel Pentium Dual-Core 2140 (1.6 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)
Intel Pentium Dual-Core 2160 (1.8 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)
Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5200(2.5 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 (1.8 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E4400 (2.0 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6320 (1.86 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 (2.13 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 (2.33 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 (2.66 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E7300 (2.66 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 (2.80 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB)
Wolfdale Core 2 Duo, E8400, 3.0GHz, 6MB, 1333FSB, 65W, E0
Wolfdale Core 2 Duo, E8500, 3.16GHz, 6MB, 1333FSB, 65W, C0
Wolfdale Core 2 Duo E8500 (3.16 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB)
Wolfdale Dual Core Kit, E8600, 3.33GHz, 6MB, 1333FSB, 65W, E0
Also, the Intel Pentium E6500 2.93 GHz dual core processor.
Prior to installing the processor you need to check that you have BIOS Version 1.0.15, or higher, when support for new Intel CPU's was added.
