How transfer data from old to new computer.
How transfer data from old to new computer.
I'm ready to retire my xps400, but want to know the best way to get all of the data to the new machine. I've got things backed up to cd's but that cumbersome. Is there a way to do it more directly? Software needed? etc.
Thanks
Brian

There are several different ways you could do this.
Temporarily put the hard drive from your old computer into the new. If you have 4 IDE devices ( such as HD, CD, DVD & CD-RW ) disconnect one briefly. You don't need to fix it in place just connect it up.
Laplink via Parallel or USB laplink cable.
External zip disks
Network the two machines with PCI network cards and a cross over cable or through a hub
If you're on a cable ADSL modem e-mail it to yourself

IntelliMover finds ALL files, then lets you select what you want to move. Click, and it moves the data very rapidly. You also will have a log of all files you moved. You can also go back and pick up more.

I was faced with a similar situation when I purchased my latest computer. What I ended up doing was establishing a Direct Cable Connection (DCC) between my two systems to transfer data. Admittedly it wasn't as fast as I expected but it sure beat transfering the files via floppy
The only thing I needed to purchase was a parallel cable. Microsoft has a lot of knowledge base documents that explain how to do this if you are interested.
