HOW TO CONNECT AN OLD IEA/PATA hdd TO NEW XPS8700

Hi Everyone:

Whats the bext way to connect older IDE Western Digital Drive to a new DELL XPS8700?

1. I tried a dual docking station (Thermaltake) with an ADAPTER SLEEVE to convert the plugs to SATA then plugged the docking station into the back of the XPS 8700 with UBS cable. The System 7 Pro recognized the new drive as being there, but wouldn't talk to it. The older drive jumper was set to the SLAVE DRIVE position

2. I then tried mounting the older IDE drive into the spare bay inside the XPS 8700 tower.  I attached a new sata cable to the mother board and the power cable to the slave extension that comes out of the sata drive. The System7 Pro wouldn't even boot.

Any technical suggestions? I need the older files as soon as possible.

Thanks WriterRob

Apricorn Drive wire.  Make sure the drive is set to Cable Select.

USE CARE when attaching the Molex power to the drive it is possible to

FORCE It in backwards and ruin the drive.

Compatible with almost any 2.5" or 3.5" IDE/PATA or SATA Hard Drive

Offers Plug-n-Play connectivity

You need to set the jumper settings of the IDE hard drive to 'Master', not slave.

If you only need to transfer the data files and folders, I've found the best method is to use a USB 2.0 adaptor similar to THIS and attach the hard drive to an USB port on the new computer transfer the files and folders to it.

Note: Only data files and folders can be transfered, any applications, utlities and programs, need to be reinstalled from their CD's, or downloaded from the publisher's website.
