Dimension 84 and WinXp 64 bit

Someone said the computer's hardware was able to run 64 bit but the WinXP Pro software is not.
Will WinXP Pro 64 bit work on this model?

TIA

That software requires a 64 bit CPU, so no that will not work with your system.

Unless you do have an EMT64 bit CPU.  Some 8400's do have the 6xx series CPU's in them.

Even if you do have a 64 bit CPU, you don'y want to run XP 64.  Even Microsoft recommends not running it.  Drivers are hard to find and in most cases 64 bit can run applications up to 40% slower than regular XP.

I agree on the drivers.   Search and see if you can find all the drivers needed for your pc, if so go ahead and do the upgrade.  As for applications running slower.   Ugh....maybe that's a legitimate claim from someone, but i've never had any trouble of the sort.   That being said i've only run x64 for about 2 months now.   I personally haven't really noticed any huge difference in performance so far.  That being said the one thing you will find is not all applications will install in x64 as of right now.

Thanks to everyone for all the help.

This is what Dell says my CPU is;

C3824 PROCESSOR, 80547, PENTIUM 4 PRESCOTT DT, Pentium 4 Prescott DT, 3.0GHZ, 1 MEGB, 800FSB, SKT-T

I have no idea what that says as far as being 64 bit or not.

I'm just [still] trying to find a way for the machine to use all its RAM.

Ugh.

I give up.......:D

Hyperthread is on and IntelMEM.exe doesn't show up.

I'm not going to bother with XP 64 then.
Sounds like way too much trouble.

Any idea why the dang fool thing is resetting to the "WinXP" desktop theme every I reboot?
I always run Windows classic style instead and this is getting annoying........:-\

open task manager > processes tab >

look for IntelMEM.exe  If it is there then you have it and it is turned on.

I recommend going to the bios.  Restart > f2 > once in the bios look for Performance > Hyperthread > ON

EM64T is insatlled on all Intel 600 series from Dell.

Just becuase you have it doesn't mean it is turned on.

Take the advice from Daddyjaxx and don't install Windows 64.  It ain't worth it.

BETA version.  BETA means Big Error Try Aagain.

Beta version of Microsoft Antispyware doesn't work well either.  I have Spysweeper and that program catches stuff that MS misses.  I still run both programs.

Intel® EM64T requires a computer system with a processor, chipset, BIOS, operating system, device drivers and applications enabled for Intel EM64T. Processor will not operate (including 32-bit operation) without an Intel EM64T-enabled BIOS. Performance will vary depending on your hardware and software configurations. See www.intel.com/info/em64t for more information including details on which processors support Intel EM64T or consult with your system vendor for more information. Back to Top

Another way to be 75% sure you have 64 bit is right click my computer:

If the Physical Address Extension is there, you either have the 64 bit CPU or a 5xx J series CPU.  I'm not sure if Dell even used the 5xx J series in their systems.  If it's not there, you don't have 64 bit.

restart PC > when you see the dell logo press F2 or just keep pressing F2 until you get into the bios.  Save settings?

All Dimension 8400 have the 630 or 600 series cpu.

Make sure it is turned on.  Your PC will zoom faster.

1) Bios, 2) drivers, 3) chipset, 4) applications, and 5) OS.

4GB of ram is recommended.  256mb min.

In order to take full advantage of xp 64 you all 5 working in unison.

Important: Windows XP Professional x64 Edition cannot be successfully installed on x86 (32-bit) systems or 64-bit Intel Itanium–based systems. 32-bit device drivers are not supported on Windows XP Professional x64 Edition

XP 64 is but a nachtmare.

This is the last post needed here.  From the horses mouth, Dell.

One way is Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Info

On the right side of the window, locate Processor in the Item column.
The Value should be Family 15, Model 4, Stepping 3 CPUinfo

OR

Use MSINFO to Verify you have an EM64T Processor

  1. Click the Start button and then click Run.
    The Run window appears.
  2. In the text box, type MSINFO32 and then click the OK button.
    The System Information window appears.
  3. On the right side of the window, locate Processor in the Item column.
The Value should be Family 15, Model 4, Stepping 3 CPUinfo.

You don't need 4GB of RAM for anything.

Fascinating.

It says that on my 8400 but not the 8300 and also on this Inspiron 8200 with a 2.4g cpu.

I'll have to check the other Inspiron 8200 with a 1.8 cpu.

What a handy, informative little window!.......:)

I have a dell dimension 4700 and an 8400.  The 4700 has intel 530, 8400-intel 630.  Both say Physical Address Extension but only the 6xx is EM64T.

The Physical Address Extension has nothing to do with 64 bit.  That is only Disable Execute, or more antivirus stuff.  Only 5xx J series have this and ALL 6xx series.
