CPU upgrade Dell dimension 9200 core 2 duo 2.4Ghz

***, was wondering if someone could help me.  I know it's not supported by dell however I would like to upgrade my CPU to the max speed supported by my Dimension 9200 .. I currently have a 2.4Ghz cpu and purchased a E8500 3.16Ghz which is NOT compatible... was wondering if I could go with a 2.66 E7300, I I think the problem is with the bus speed .. the E6600 and E7300 are both 1066Mhz but the E8500 and E8600 are 1333Mhz.

Can someone confirm that the E7300 2.66/1066Mhz is compatible.....?  Thanks.

Problems with an e6700 upgrade - pc is not starting anymore.

My computer last week:

Dell dimension 9200, bios 2.5.3

motherboard revision REV A00

CPU e6420

Some months ago I removed the 8600gts and installed a ati radeon 4600series without vents, passive cooling

This computer is running very good now for over two years !

Now I bought a e6700 cpu (new). I installed it correctly, hit power, the ventilators are running, but the computer does not boot, I can´t even access bios, the monitor keeps dark.

Several reboots, clear cmos -> no success.

Then I installed back the e6420. PC is working as usual...

Any ideas?

insufficient power? motherboard rev a00 too old?

Problem solved: wrong cpu

I have ordered a brand new intel pentium dual-core e6700 (costa rica)

3.20 Ghz / 2M / 1066 / 06

This cpu is not compatible !

The correct cpu is a

Intel Core 2 Duo E6700

this is so sad...

Prior to installing the processor, you need to upgrade to the latest BIOS version, 2.5.3, with version 2.5.1, new CPU support was added.

The procedures for replacing the processor are HERE<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>.

As you will reusing the heatsink, plan on cleaning it's base and applying thermal compound to the processor.

Directions for cleaning and applying thermal compound, are HERE.

You only need a small tube of thermal compound, this can be purchased from any computer store.

Try locating the processor you need, by using Google, also try StarMicro HERE<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>, also browse eBay, I've had good luck purchasing processors there.

First, sorry for necroing an old thread, but it is relevant.

Second, thanks for providing all that info on compatible processors for the 9200, it saved me a lot of work and time.

Third, if I get the Q6700 will I have to upgrade the bios or anything like that? or is it straight plug and play?

Yes, you need to check that the latest BIOS version is installed prior to installing the processor.

I have a Dimension 9200 with a 2.4 GHz quad-core CPU (as shipped from Dell) which is happily running with 4x 2 Gig DSIMMs for an available 8 Gigs of RAM. After reading the comments here i did some research, and the chipset this system is based on G965/P965 supports 8 Gigs of RAM and once I confirmed the BIOS was the latest (2.4.3, IIRC) I gave it a shot. I've run numerous tests on the system with issues. Windows, CPU-Z, and a burn-in test program all report 8 Gigs and no issues.

My RAM right now is a mix of matching pairs from two vendors, with similar specs: 1.8v, CL=6, DDR2-800 (very common specs for this type of RAM).

Just a note to say thank you for the advice given on this thread.

I have a Dell Dimension 9200 which was running a Core2 Duo E6600 and thanks to the advice here I've installed a Core2 Quad Q6700, which is working brilliantly.  That, together with a new graphics card (needed and more performance and HDMI to support my new 2560x1440 monitor) and 8GB of RAM (yes 8GB is recognised) and windows 10 (yep that works too), have transformed by old machine completely.  Video runs beautifully on the high res monitor, photos render instantly - it's like a new machine.

Thanks again,

Clive
