Computer stuck entering sleep mode

I have a Dell desktop and have had problems with the sleep mode for some time now.  Sometimes (but not always) when I attempt to put the computer into sleep mode the monitor says it enters powersave mode but the computer is still active along with all of the other peripherals (mouse, keyboard, etc.).  I have already updated the drivers for the monitor so I don't think it's a problem with the monitor itself.  I have all of the standard equipment and am currently running Vista.  Any suggestions would be appreciated and I hope to hear any solutions from you guys.

Restoring would re-load the operating system, drivers and applications just as when your PC arrived from the factory. You would need to back up all of your personal files, and after doing so, you'd need to reinstall any applications you have added. Here is the OS restore procedure.

If you would prefer to diagnose the problem first, here's one site where you can get started. This is nearly always a driver or some other software problem.

Hi Alan24,

This is actually fairly common. There are any number of components that prevent systems from going into sleep mode. Peripherals, add-on cards, etc. Some searching will find you plenty of help on the topic.

If you still need help after searching, feel free to post back, but we need the model of your desktop.

Thank you for responding.  I've been looking into the problem for around a month now with no success.  I've tried various suggested fixes, all to no avail.  My desktop is a Dell Inspiron 545.

I would normally start by disconnecting all peripherals aside from the monitor, keyboard and mouse. Have you already tried that? Can you tell me what operating system you have?

The sure-fire method to fix this is to reinstall the factory hard drive image. Not sure if you've considered that.

The only other peripherals I have connected to my computer are the default Dell speakers, but I have not attempted unplugging them.  I am running Windows Vista Home Premium 2007.  If it matters I am also using Service Pack 2.  And regarding the reinstalling of the factory hard drive image, what exactly does that do?  I've never heard of that and I would like to know the effects before I would attempt that but it sounds rather more drastic than unplugging the peripherals.

Okay, I followed your link and searched for a relevant hotfix from Microsoft.  I found one that appears to address my problem spot on.  Thank you for your help, and I believe my problem is solved now.
