Booting from Sata card(pci)?

On my 4550 is it possible to boot from my sata drive on a pci controler, I want to do a fresh install & use my sata drive as the op system drive

Best I know, BIOS has no provision for booting to a PCI device.  Though back in the 20M HDD days, the drive controller was a bus card and that booted just fine, perhaps that function has been preserved.
 
Nothing to lose by trying but the 2 hours it takes.   Anyone know?
