BLACK SCREEN with Cursor

What can I do to fix my computer?  I have tried all the safe modes, to no avail.  I keep ending up with the dreaded black screen with a cursor that moves, and that's IT!  Frustrated, and know little-to-nothing about computers!  HELP!?

Can you Ctrl + Alt + Delete? if you can go to the applications tab and click new process and type in explorer.exe and press enter.

Hi Catzrn,

Would you please provide the model of your desktop and operating system? Can you describe your problem in a bit more detail? Are you getting the back screen/blinking cursor before the operating system starts up? If so, that may be an indication of a hard drive problem. The best plan of attack would be to run the Dell diagnostics by booting to your Dell drivers and utilities disc to check for hardware problems.

Dimension 9200, windows vista.  I turn on the computer, and it looks like it's running, then before logon screen would appear, it goes black (with a moveable cursor).

Is the power button LED, solid green, blinking green, solid amber, blinking amber, or off?

Are there any *Beeps*?

Check the reading of Diagnostic Lights on the front panel?

The Dimension 9200 Troubleshooter and Diagnostic Guide, is HERE.

Hi,

I was trying to Manually Reinstall Your Windows Vista Operating System using the CD/DVD that came with the laptop. My laptop is Dell Inspiron 1720.

I went through this link (http://www.petri.co.il/install_windows_vista.htm) and read this step mentioned towards middle of this website page (Now comes a long waiting period, where the installation process configures the system. Again, the exact amount of time will greatly depend on your computer's hardware).... after that, the screen went like black grayish with a white cursor and nothing happens after that. I waited for 12 hours thinking something is happening but nothing happened. I shut it down and tried re-installing from F12 and same situation happens.

Appreciate any help.

Hi IllinoisPC,

I recommend you follow Dell's procedure.

This is the dekstop forum. You might want to post in the disk drives forum for more help.
