Same NIC Mellanox cards detected once by iDRAC inventory

Hello community,

Recently replaced 3 NICs Mellanox -ConnectX-6 Lx MT2894 Family and on the iDRAC 9 inventory only 1 slot (out of 3) is visible, with green status, as NVIDIA-ConnectX-6 Lx and provide some details on the NIC Slot tab.

The others 2 at status have "?" and are visible as Mellanox Network Adapter and no details in the NIC Slot tabs.

OS is detecting all of them, no problems there. All 3 NIC have the same driver version running.

My confuse is why only 1 slot is visible as it should in iDRAC? Any advice where to check deeper?

Thanks!

Hi,

You need to check and ensure your PCIe riser configuration and expansion card installation. Chcek here, https://dell.to/4cbijug

Also it is important all NICs are running the same firmware version. If necessary, insert other cards into the recognized slot, update the firmware and try again. You can clear the iDRAC system event logs to ensure there are no residual errors causing detection issues. If your iDRAC FW is old then trying to update, the new update may include fixes for hardware detection issues. Be aware that downgrading firmware is generally not recommended as it might introduce instability or compatibility issues Make sure the cards are in the right places. and try to reset iDRAC. https://dell.to/3SEtzbM. I just thinking even PSU might affect the other cards. I mean installing multiple high-performance NICs like Mellanox ConnectX-6 can increase the server's power consumption.

When cards are inserted into a system and the system is powered on, it takes 5 to 8 mins for the cards to properly appear within the system inventory. I dont have experience with non-Dell/mellanox cards, so their behavior may be different in the inventory.

Hello thanks for choosing Dell.
May I ask what your server model is? Because there's a limitation on the number of ConnectX-6Ls you can use depending on the server model.
Can you make sure the firmware version is the same on all the 3 cards?

@DELL-Young E Hello,

I have PowerEdge R6615, service tag:<removed by moderator( publicly shared)

I checked the firmware version and indeed one of it has an older version (firmware=26.35.2000 (MT_0000000575)) than the others (firmware=26.39.1002 (DEL0000000031)).

So in this case the one with the older version is recognized by iDRAC, which is weird if I'm correct. Not sure if firmware downgrade for the others 2 can be a safe solution.

Can you advice?

Best regards!
