Understanding MDS zone merging
Hello folks
First time posting here, hope someone can help.
Im to create an ISL on a couple mds switches, no big deal. But dont quite understand how the zone merging takes place on an already configured 2 switches.
Let me explain: Already have 2 separate switches, each one with vsan 10, but with a different active zoneset (differently named as well)
When I bring up the ISL and port channel, I understand the zone merge takes place, and the switches learn each others zone but dont actuallly save it until I issue a "zone copy active-zoneset full-zoneset vsan" and the a copy run start on each switch... Is this correct?
Also, when creating new zones do I need to issue that command each time? and theres a note in the documentation that the zone copy command will overwrite the fcalias configuration.... can someone elaborate?
Thanks!!!

The above command copies the active zoneset to the full zoning data base on the switch. The copy is actually an append.
If the full zoning data base already contains zoning information that is not part of the active zoneset, the active and full zonesets will not match.
Copy Zone can only be used when the zones in the active zone set are completely unique from those in the Planned Zones folder.
If one or more Planned Zones matches one or more Zones present in the Active Zone Set, this function is not allowed
To add a zone on either switch, you have to create the zone, add the new zone to the zoneset, and activate the zoneset. If you activate the zoneset without issuing the copy zoneset active-zoneset full-zoneset vsan X command , the switch where the new zone has been configured does a zone merge, and advertises only the configured zoneset out. This does not include the zone information that had been previously learned, overwrites the zone information in the other switch, and loses the zone information that had been previously defined in the receiving switch. If a zone 3 is created in Switch 1, added to the zoneset, and that zoneset is activated, zone 1 and zon e3 are sent to Switch 2. Switch 2 now has set A as the active zoneset with zone members zone 1 and zone 3.

So I do need to issue the command, but what about the fcalias overwrite warning? there no duplicated fcalias on the switches, whats gonna happen?
Also, the flogi database will be visible with all WWNs from both switches right? I need to zone 1 wwn from switch 1 to a wwn in switch 2
Thanks

Hi,
As per the article The zone copy command will deletes all fcalias configuration , i had checked many MDS documents , but i dont find any thing related to fcalias while ISL , i can see the same only on this particular article , its better to chat with PSE if the switch is under maintenance support.
When i did ISL between 2 MDS switches 9509 (version 3.3 SAN OS) , i didnt face any issue on fcalias configuration
Zoning should be done based on your requirement , if you need to have inter-switch zoning the you can select wwn from different switches
