How to validate if the driver for this HBA is compatible with switch

Hello,

I checked the patch panel, cable, sfp, switch, and for the life of me I cannot get these switch ports to turn on. The only constant variable is that all the new servers are running the same firmware, hba. The server sees the HBAs running normally, although they are not turned on. When I enable the port, I get a "not connected" error. I have checked all my connections, are fine, and attached another server to the patch panel and it came up. The windows folks are blaming the switch code. I have attached the firmware version.

The HBAs are 8GB, switch is 8GB compatible - MDS 9148. The HBAs are LPe12002-M8 firmware below. The switch is running IOS 5.2(6a). - Thanks in advance! Admingirl

Hi,

First of all I would not think that a firmware version on a switch or a HBA firmware will cause a port not to be able to come online, or even get the basic negotiation going on at the FC level.

 

Second on your question how to validate if a driver for a HBA is compatible with a switch, you could check the elab advisor webpage:

and use the advance query. To check, host / hba / switch / array etc.

But to go back to the original problem: 

  • A server port is not connecting to a switch port.
  • You tested another physical server port on the same patch panel and that is working.

Which explains how to basic troubleshoot a connectivity issue.

One option you have is, you have a “good” tested connection, with the 2nd server you connected.

Move the cable of the “bad” server to the port on the switch of the “good” 2nd server port and check what is happening. If the port is not coming up, then you know the problem is outside the switch. Then start replacing parts one by one, with testing in between, to eliminate the hardware.

If you still have problems and you have collected the data to proof that it is not working, open a Sr with support, to assist further.

If the driver is supported in the ESM, then it is considered compatible with the switch/director and firmware that is also listed in the ESM. No direct matrix though.

Just because you didn't exactly say how each component was tested:

Did insert a LC wrap plug at the HBA and did it light up?

Did you insert an LC wrap plug at the switch port and did it light up?

Did you try flipping the 'polarity' of the FC path by swapping the two fibers somewhere in the path?  (This is far and away our most frequent issue with new installs)

Our issue in the past has been not having a crossover cable - or multiple crossover cables in the path. Talk gotta link to listen.   Just like in my old serial RS-232 days!  One of the previous posts did mention flipping the tx-rx at one cable end. We use a lot of the moulded cables so would need to go back to the stockpile to find the right type. Look to see if one of the fibers in the pair has a colored band. That makes it easy to tell if it is crossed.  Then check to see if they are on the left one one end and right on the other.

My boss always says check the physical layer first.
