Hello, trying to enhance my daily checks on our SAN directors; may you please provide recommended commands to perform to check the switches health status, including but not limited to performance , CPU utilization , check if there any dumps or crashes on the switch, check port utilizations this might require different tool other than ssh , if there a ISL links this need to be checked, what else could be checked , VSAN errors, any recommendations would be much appreciated .

if you have any list of commands please share it so we can add it to the list.

Thnx,

Hi,
As your question is regards to CISCO MDS switches I would recommend that you get an application like 'DCNM' Cisco Data Center Network Manager to manage your Fibre channel switches.

- The application has sections for 'Viewing Switch CPU Information'
- While performance Manager gathers network device statistics historically and provides this information graphically using a web browser.
- Also it has a section for 'Viewing Health Information'

You can reference the DCNM fundemants guides at the following link.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/datacenter/sw/6_x/dcnm/fundamentals/guide/dcnm/DCNM-SAN-LAN_published/DCNM_Fundamentals.html
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/storage/san_switches/mds9000/roadmaps/rel60.html

Hope this helps.

If you want to do this as a daily job, I would recommend that you could take a look at some netowrk monitoring and mangement tools. Most of these tools should be able to monitor the items such as bandwidth utilization, port drop rate, port errors, fabric switch status, etc.
