. Cisco line cards and fc modules

what is the difference between line card and fc module in cisco mds switches? for example say 16 port fc module can have how many line cards? does the line card also needs to be 16 port or can we have 4 line cards each having 4 ports. Also one MDS switch can have how many FC modules and how many line cards. Also for switch interface what does fc 1/1 and fc 2/3 means.

Thanks.

different MDS switches support different number of ports, modules, services ..etc

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/ps4159/ps4358/index.html

line card/ module ..same thing. There are different cards though, some are over-subscribed, some are not, some are used for long distance connectivity (FCIP), some are used for different services (SSM cards). Explore the link i posted above to familiarize yourself with MDS family

fc1/1 means card 1, port 1

fc2/3 means card 2 port 3

MDS9506 can have 6 cards, but minus the 2 supervisor cards, you're left with 4 line cards of your choice. This can be a variaty of cards, ranging from a 4 FC port one to a 48 port. It's your choice.

The MDS9509 can have 7 (9-2) line cards and the MDS9513 can have 11 (13-2) line cards.

The only NOT 95xx switch is the 92xx (9216 and 9222), which have 1 fixed line card and 1 empty slot for you.

Thanks for the prompt response.

Does that mean, if i have 32 port FC module i can have one line card of 32 port or have 4 line cards of 8 ports each.

Thanks,

9509 - 7 cards for SAN connectivity

9513 - 11 cards for SAN connectivity

9222i - 1 card with 18 ports built-in and you can add another card

Thanks for prompt response!

If there is 32 port FC module, then can there be one 32 port line card. Also, instead of one 32 port line card(to avoid problems if line card goes bad), can there be two 12 port line cards.

Also, how many fc modules can be there in a switch.

What are the maximum number of ports allowed on MDS 9513 switch?

Does number of ports on line card depend on FC module used? For example if 9509 is using 32 port fc module, then can it use the 7 line cards each having 12 ports? If this is true, it means that switch will have 84(12*7) ports. Is this possible or is it required that total ports on all the line cards should not be more than total number of ports on fc module used in switch.

Thanks.

If you have a mix of Generation 1 (1, 2, 4 Ggbs), and 2 linecards in your Cisco MDS chassis please see the following port limits:

MDS-9506

Mix of Gen. 1, 2 = 176 ports

Gen 2 linecards = 192 ports

MDS-9509

Mix of Gen, 1, 2 = 248 ports

Gen 2 linecards = 336 ports

MDS-9513

Mix of Gen 1, 2 = 248 ports

Gen 2 linecards = 528 ports
