Should I expand Storage Pool or create another new one ?

Hi,

We just add another 5 HD to our CX4-240 SAN.

Currently, there is a Storage Pool with 10 HD and is dedicated to a Windows File Server.

After adding the additional space, we would like to allocate half of newly added space to File Server and the remaining free space for vSphere Cluster.

If I expand the existing Storage Pool, can I create a LUN in it that can be provisioned to vSphere Cluster.  I am new to Storage Pool and the existing one is created by a consultant before.  I have experience with RAID Groups.

Thanking you in anticipation.

Hi Tony,

Host access is controlled at a LUN level, so if you expand the pool and create a new LUN(s) they can then  be added to the appropriate Storage groups to give host(s) discrete access. So yes !

Are the HD's you added the same size and speed as the existing ones in the pool ?

Just keep in mind the performance requirements of your apps also.

Yes, they are of the same model (Speed and Size).

Can I confirm what I have to do is

1) Expand the Storage Pool (Add additional 5 HD)

2) Create a new LUN for vSphere Cluster

3) Expand the LUN being used for Windows File Server

Thanks again

Sounds about right, then you'll need to add the new LUN to the Storage Group for your vSphere cluster.

You'll need to expand the volume on your Fileserver OS of course.

yes,

3) how big is the current lun and how big do you plan on growing it ? Remember unless it's GPT you can't exceed 2TB

Thanks for your advice.

That Windows Server is already running GPT and thus the total space has already been expanded to 3TB.

Thanks again.
